After the woodcocks last year, the research with satellite telemetry undertaken by Hunting Federation over the years it has expanded this year with a new challenge: to know the migratory phenology of one of the most important species for Italian hunters, the song thrush. The initiative ofFaunistic and Agro-Environmental Studies and Research Office of National Federcaccia, under the scientific coordination of the University of Milan, Department of Sciences and Ecology, has decided to focus on the most refined technology available on the market today, the ultra-light solar-charged transmitters that send their position to the system's satellites ARGOS.
Given the low weight of the species (between 60 and 70 grams) the only compatible device is the 2 gram transmitter, from the US company Microwave Telemetry. A perfect organization on the territory by Federcaccia Sardegna, in particular by the Provincial President of Nuoro dr. Giuseppe Rodriguez, and the President of Federcaccia Sassari Mario Azara, together with the help of various people on site, made it possible to carry out the project. From 15 to 18 December a team composed of doctors Sergio Scebba, Giuseppe La Gioia, ISPRA certified ringers and dr. Michael Sorrenti, coordinator of the Federcaccia Office, captured the six thrushes planned and equipped them with the satellite transmitter.
The aim is to know the movements of the subjects both in the winter period, both in that of pre-nuptial migration, to verify with the most effective method the timing of the movements and the reproductive areas of the population that winters in Italy. Federcaccia thanks the Region of Sardinia and the Environment Department in particular for having welcomed the research and providing the necessary authorization in very short times.
In the coming weeks Federcaccia will provide updates on the status of the research. “We are extremely convinced that only with the Scientific studies we can concretely defend our passion. We have ascertained this this year with the victory at the Tar on the closing period of the woodcock hunt "(The President of Federcaccia Sardegna, Davide Bacciu, and National Federcaccia Research and Studies Office - Michael Sorrenti).
