A NECESSARY MEETING
The Regional Council of the. met yesterday in Florence in an extraordinary session Federcaccia Toscana – Tuscan Hunters Union. The meeting became necessary following what emerged in the last few hours regarding, respectively: 1) law no. 101 of 12 July 2024 (conversion law of the AGRICULTURE DECREE); 2) the contents of the next hunting calendar 2024/2025; 3) to further extraordinary acts currently being approved.
BOAR HUNTING PERIOD EXTENDED BY ONE MONTH IN SUITABLE AREAS ONLY
The FIDC-UCT Regional Council expresses its opposition to the extension by one month of the collection period of the species within the areas dedicated to wild boar. This measure risks unnecessarily weakening the hunted hunting system and organized teams, which to date also appear to be a central component in the fight against ASF, and interfering with other forms of hunting. Instead, in order to effectively and balancedly achieve the real sampling objectives, it would be urgent to intervene decisively, for example, within the system of protected areas, or to implement a serious management plan for interventions within the wildlife hunting companies. and unsuitable areas.
LET'S START WITH THE NUMBERS
Regarding the increase in the numerical objectives of the withdrawal plans, we must be clear. We must overcome the logic of generalized increases not anchored to scientific data and the real population densities of the species in the area. It is necessary to invest in serious and innovative monitoring methods to know the correct density of wild boar populations and other ungulates in Tuscany, to be able to intervene in a targeted manner, to guarantee an effective fight against ASF and correct wildlife management.
FIDC'S CONSIDERATIONS
NO to "spot" measures which leave problems unresolved, weakening organized teams. NO to measures that introduce ethically unacceptable forms of harvesting (nocturnal selection hunting, use of thermal viewers and attractive foraging) which, if implemented, would only create tension and conflict between the various forms of hunting and the hunters, as well as safety problems . For these and other considerations, the Federcaccia Toscana – UCT asks the Tuscany Region to guarantee a necessary balance also on future extraordinary measures, announced in the press, the contents of which we are still unaware of at the moment. For this reason, we will urgently ask for a discussion table with Vice President Saccardi to highlight the risks that such decisions could entail, bringing to that forum the reasons, the tradition and the role of the over 600 wild boar hunting teams operating in the Tuscan districts, which currently represent over 30.000 hunters. As regards the other proposals for the 2024-2025 Hunting Calendar, our Association has already sent the region a substantial technical document reiterating - among other issues - the need to keep the wood dove among the huntable species, guaranteeing its inclusion even in pre-opening.
