Carcass analysis
First case of African swine fever in Tuscany in a wild boar, found dead, in the municipality of Zeri (Ms), on the border with Liguria. The discovery took place on Thursday 18 July in an area already under attention as a maximum alert zone (i.e. surveillance zone 2). The legal procedures were immediately implemented and an analysis was immediately ordered on the carcass which gave a positive result for the disease. The intervention procedures had already been shared in advance between the Tuscany Region and the North West Tuscany Local Health Authority, given the spread of the disease in regions bordering Tuscany.
Local hunters
In order to contain the further spread of the virus and limit any economic repercussions, all surveillance and control procedures have already been put in place in the area affected by the discovery, thanks also to the collaboration of the municipality of Zeri and local hunters. The Region has also already taken steps to notify the Ministry of Health and the Extraordinary Commissioner for Swine Fever of the case for their collaboration.
The evolution of the situation
African swine fever is not a zoonosis, therefore it is a disease that is not transmitted to humans but only to pigs, both wild (wild boars) and domestic. The Department for the Right to Health and the Department for Agriculture are carefully following the evolution of the situation.
