The results of a questionnaire
Last November 12th in Mestre, at the Ca' Foscari University, within the framework of the 4th International Conference on flamingoDr. Michele Sorrenti of the FIdC Studies and Research Office presented the results of a questionnaire sent to managers of valley wildlife hunting companies. The questionnaire asked what impacts, and to what extent, occur in valley habitats due to the presence of flamingos, which have increased exponentially over the last 15 years.
Damaged seabed
The data collected demonstrates that a high percentage of these habitats are suffering from seabed damage, with the disappearance of submerged vegetation, particularly various species of Ruppia. Restoring suitable conditions for the presence of various aquatic bird species, dependent on these submerged meadows, has a significant economic impact on the managers of private fish farms.
Common goal
The problems caused to rice paddies and the recent impact on Venice's Marco Polo airport were also discussed. The presentation concluded with the hope of finding ways to deter flamingos, furthering the shared goal of conserving aquatic birds as a whole in these unique environments, which today exist and are preserved thanks to human intervention (source: Federcaccia Studies and Research Office).
