Environmental sensitivity
Hunting is hunting, massacres – even if legalized by a regional provision – are something else, something unacceptable both from a moral point of view and from a scientific point of view and with regard to supranational interests. The Emilia-Romagna region persists, incomprehensibly, in pursuing an objective that not only hunters but all citizens with a minimum of environmental sensitivity consider a real blasphemy. It is absolutely intolerable, in fact, that a Region believes it can legislate on the subject of migratory wild fauna that cannot be considered in any way an exclusive heritage. The wood pigeon it is a huntable species and therefore it is not clear why, before decreeing a disgusting mass cull during the nesting period, it is not decided – simply – to increase the number of animals that can be taken during the regular hunting season.
Deafening silence
But the most serious and disturbing aspect of all of this absurd crusade of extermination is precisely the guilty silence of many that we consider "co-responsible". First of all ISPRA which, at least in words, has always shown itself to be very attentive and sensitive to the overlaps. But certainly no less so are the numerous associations that call themselves environmental and animal rights, the parties in regional government and those visceral anti-hunters of the 5 Star Movement and AVS and - incredibly - many important Hunting Associations: all in rigorous press silence so as not to disturb the regional "manipulator", author of such a disgusting provision.
Initiative to be condemned
In this regard, the interventions (unfortunately rare) of politicians who courageously criticize the choice to intervene during the nesting period, causing very serious damage to a migratory species such as the wood pigeon, are totally acceptable. We of Libera Caccia, while condemning the initiative of the Emilia-Romagna region and firmly stigmatizing such incomprehensible silences and what appear to be real connivances of a political nature, announce that within a few days we will prepare an appeal, motivating it both from a technical-scientific point of view and from ethical aspects. And, to quote Bertolt Brecht, "There must be a judge in Berlin!" capable of avoiding this absurd massacre on nests (The president of ANLC Paolo Sparvoli).
