What is happening
As president of the National Free Hunting Association, I feel it is my duty to express surprise and indignation at what is happening. on wildlife managementI'm referring to the incredible ruling by the Court of Cassation, which upheld the appeal of the Marche regional administration regarding the compensation requested by the driver of a motorcycle that collided with a roe deer. Essentially, the Court of Cassation ruled that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident had to demonstrate due diligence by providing evidence of the exact circumstances of the accident. There you have it! Ultimately, it's always the individual citizen who loses out.
Fuori controllo
As president of a hunting association, the equivalent of a hunters' union, but also as a simple citizen, I can state, without fear of contradiction, that one of the most out-of-control things in Italy is wildlife, which is shortsightedly and culpably protected "regardless," always and in any case, even when it causes death, injury, and damage. Therefore, the problem concerns society as a whole; it's not just "animal rights activists versus hunters," but also those who work night shifts, tourists, all road users, and farmers. Unmanaged wildlife is a public danger. The right to life is more important than any ideology.
Numbers that speak for themselves
These numbers cannot be ignored: just to limit ourselves to the last two years, it's worth remembering that in 2024, a 6% increase over 2023, there were 181 road accidents resulting in 14 deaths and 254 injuries. In the first six months of 2025, however, there were 81 accidents resulting in 7 deaths and 118 injuries. At this point, we wonder what the two motorcyclists killed by a wild boar (to give just two examples) are supposed to prove: 09/06/2024 Rome, Via Cassia – 10/02/2025 Barberino di Mugello.
The requests to the political class
Or what kind of diligent conduct should have been adopted by the driver of the vehicle that, following a collision with a large seagull, skidded, causing a car alongside to overturn and injuring its occupants. Too often, unfortunately, the major national media outlets fail to give these events the due prominence, leaving them to be covered solely by the local press. Therefore, given this incredible ideological attitude, I ask Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Government, ISPRA, the entire political class, and the media to finally adopt a more pragmatic and scientific approach to the social problem posed by a population of wild fauna (especially ungulates) that is unparalleled in all of Europe, where, moreover, the word "management" is not considered a blasphemy!
