News from Sicily
Below we report the latest updates put in black and white by the Friends of Scolopax association regarding the Overland 2024 project and to pre-nuptial migration: “The idea of investigating the wintering area at more southern latitudes represented a cornerstone of scientific research on the species. In recent times the project 'La via mediterranea' was thus conceived with the aim of creating a model of distribution and dispersion in the reference area".
Beginning of migration
The note continues: “The Island of Pantelleria represents a permanent platform of the ongoing study. The geographical location, the biological structure of the territory, the climate and the interannual variability to which the island is subject, allow a safe and interesting approach to research. Today we have recorded the start of migration for one of the woodcocks equipped last January on the island".
Battery problems
The update ends like this: “Bella Mbriana, a very beautiful woodcock weighing 320 grams, carried out the first stage of the migration. The chosen stop is located in the green hills of Irpinia and this makes us very happy. However, we warn that the battery charge is low, which could delay or invalidate monitoring".
