Predator damage
Liguria region has earmarked over 1,86 million euros over five years to support Ligurian farmers against damage caused by predators. These funds come from the new CSR 2023/2027, the Regional Complement for Rural Development (formerly PSR). “The approval of the call entitled 'Specific commitments to coexist with large carnivores' represents a crucial measure for supporting livestock farming in the mountainous and rural areas of Liguria, where there is a greater presence of large carnivores,” commented Alessandro Piana, Vice President of the Liguria Region with responsibility for Agriculture, Livestock, Hinterland and Biodiversity.
Prevention actions
"The intervention is a concrete response to the needs of Ligurian farmers, often put in difficulty by the damage caused by predation. This measure strengthens the prevention actions already adopted, promotes the coexistence between livestock activities and wild fauna and guarantees economic support to those who protect our rural and natural heritage".
Minimum dimensions
“The call – continues Piana – provides for an annual payment proportionate to the hectares of grazed surface and the commitments undertaken by the breeders. For surfaces greater than 50 hectares, the premium is modulated to take into account economies of scale. The breeders who will join the call will commit, for a period of five years, to adopt minimum prevention measures, such as the installation and maintenance of fences and continuous surveillance of the livestock. The choice to use guard dogs is optional, but encouraged as it represents an effective measure to reduce the risk of predation. It is not only a matter of economic support – he concludes – but also a step forward in managing the problem of the presence of large carnivores in our rural areas. Defending Ligurian agriculture also means preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for our mountain communities” (source: Liguria Region).
