The historic Haenel brand has resumed running after entering Merkel's corporate and financial orbit: this name, a guarantee in the past of technical innovation, first-rate materials and accurate workmanship, was expected on the market where it reappeared a few years ago with a complete series of hunting and shooting long guns. We now present the symbolic weapon of the Central European mountain hunter, the kipplauf, that light single-barreled single-barreled barrel that many other hunters in our area have been passionate about for some time. Before observing the mechanical setting, we point out what turns out to be the ace in the hole of this weapon: the selling price.
It is known how the quotation of the kipplaufs is the sore point of a sum of excellent qualities: we therefore leave aside the classic setting achievements with file adjustments of super-specialized personnel by switching to the Jäger system, taken up several years ago when metal treatments and Machined precision machining has made it possible to produce this ingenious invention at low costs with the best guarantees of duration. The selling price of other products has certainly dropped compared to the classic kipplauf, but it was the old Suhl signature that placed the price of the basic type at only € 2.200,00, a very low figure in the specific sector.
The technique
The prismatic action frame obtained from a solid ergal, similar to a classic one, has flat sides connected at an angle to the upper line while two concave moldings highlight the head where the opening key is inserted, made of precision casting with an integral rotation pin. . The interior is quite different, where there are two recesses separated by a hardened steel dowel: the first crossed by the pin for the rotation of the barrel, in cemented steel and stopped by two external screws, the second seat of the oscillating block on which this is based sealing and closing system. This L-shaped block pivots on a pin inserted transversely between the vertical walls with a very simple and ingenious coupling: the upper part in a circular arc and a square hole in the horizontal arm combine with the details machined by the breech monobloc in which the barrel is inserted. From this steel artifact, with a length of about 10 cm and a polygonal section, a small truncated square pyramid tenon protrudes below with an abutment in the rod for adjusting the draft, a second larger tenon with the recess suitable for the pin rotation of the barrel, finally a third always with a tapered prism for insertion into the square hole of the block; lastly, there is a pocket obtained in the rear extension where the upper part of the L-shaped piece is inserted. There is therefore an upper joint between the pocket and the round profile, a lower joint between the tenon and the square hole with the block resting on the median crosspiece of the rocker to unload the pin: a plug controlled by the key prevents any opening movement. The shank of the extractor slides along the left side and a strut, inserted to the left of the hinge loop, activates its movement. In the upper flat part there is a dovetail for hooking the base of an optic: a transversal recess acts as a solid anchorage avoiding displacements.
The barrel and the stock
The barrel with a tapered cylindrical section is 60 cm long and has 4 right-hand lines obtained by roto-hammering with smooth surfaces and sharp edges: the egress at the muzzle is protected by a rounded profile while the outside is finished with a semi-opaque protective treatment against abrasions and oxidations. A welded base supports the rear sight with anti-glare inclination, square sight and drift register thanks to the interlocking support, and a shaped base accommodates the blade front sight, with prism view and elevation adjustment via a knurled wheel. In the lower part of the barrel is then fixed a dowel with the tooth for hooking the rod.
The two-piece stock is made from walnut of a more than decent and functional quality for the work to be done with a favorable vein to withstand the recoil, some veins to revive the appearance and tightly closed vessels. The stock with elongated pistol grip, medium-high nosepiece, linear back, comfortable cheek rest makes it possible to shoot well braced; the tapered shaft with flat bottom and rounded sides is ideal for resting on the backpack in targeted shooting as well as for correct tightening of the weak hand in a running shot. The release button is flush-fitted and offers no grips in movements, the two fixed T-shirts with pin are screwed to the wood, the laser-machined checkering can be easily seized thanks to the raised cusps; a soft rubber buttpad softens the energy and offers a comfortable support on the ground.
The battery and final considerations
The battery with manual cocking is also a prerogative of this Haenel: the opening and closing of the barrel are used only to chamber or extract the cartridge while a slide button, sliding on the upper tang of the receiver, energizes the battery. It is easy to understand the safety that comes with running with the cartridge in the chamber, to arm only when you are ready to fire, to have a very sensitive trigger without the need for a stecher and a conventional safety. When giving up the shot, the manual disarming must be kept in mind, which is carried out either by pressing the slide button further and moving it back to the disarming position, or by acting on the opening key with the same result: otherwise you will have the rifle ready to fire and with a remarkable sensitivity to the trigger. To finish we again highlight the compact dimensions of the weapon, the low weight, the ease of dismantling it by stowing it in the backpack. The size of the anchor must lead to the choice of an optic with limited mass and measurements, in harmony with the rifle: it will certainly facilitate the achievement of results.
