Il Cinque Terre Park experiment with new ways to counter the advance of ungulates. In fact, the experimentation of Cattle Guards, dissuading passages, installed along the district closure fence, among the indirect control measures adopted by the Park Authority to contain damage from wildlife to traditional crops and the balance of ecosystems. Cattle guards are jumpers with a suspended base made of steel tubes, which inhibit the passage of ungulates.
Their effectiveness has been tested in other agricultural areas and they are safer than gates, often inadvertently left open. To explain it the expert in wildlife management, Daniel Duradoni, who coordinated the Park maintainers, and the installation of the first two structures in the Bevera area above Volastra (5 in total) used to replace the gates along the fence, near the crossings of the hiking trails.
“These structures, also equipped with handrails - adds Duradoni - are used to increase the effectiveness of the protection implemented by district fences and to allow the coexistence with the fruition activities of the path network ".
