On 20 September, for 20.000 members of the ATC Firenze Prato, the hunting season. A season in which hunters arrive after a summer characterized by a strong commitment on the voluntary front for the prevention of damage caused by ungulates, but not only.
“I would like to thank all the members - comments the President of ATC Firenze Prato Piero Certosi - for the extraordinary commitment of recent months. A commitment that has seen us protagonists not only in the hunting area, but also in the city of Florence. In fact, I like to remember the great participation of the ATC hunters, coordinated by Quadrifoglio, to clean up and make the streets of the southern Florence area, heavily hit by the storm of 1 August, accessible again ”.
This extraordinary commitment was accompanied by the equally extraordinary activity, due to an extremely dry summer, on the front of the damage prevention caused to valuable agriculture, viticulture in particular, by ungulates.
In fact, in the months of July and August, the lack of water and the scarcity of food in the woods led the game to seek its livelihood in the cultivated areas. Particularly in the vineyards, as grapes have often been the only source of water supply.
"In the same months - continues Certosi - after our appeal to hunters to lend their voluntary work, we counted about 2000 wild boars and 1000 roe deer killed with hunting and control interventions at the request of farmers. In particular for the latter type of activity we have had numerous requests from farms distributed throughout the ATC territory and the timely and targeted response of equally numerous volunteer hunters.
“The Tuscany Region itself has taken note of this emergency, which is certainly not a novelty, even if the climatic situation this year has certainly exasperated it. The proposal for an objective regional law on ungulates, lasting three years, presented by Councilor Remaschi to the Council on 9 September last, incorporates requests that we have been presenting for some time. In fact, it is proposed to bring ungulates back to a level compatible with the territory, through various methods of intervention, to guarantee agriculture, the environment and not least the safety of citizens, given the increase in road accidents due to crossing of ungulates. The strength of the proposal, in our opinion, is the desire for a homogeneous and comprehensive strategy of the entire regional territory.
"Waiting to see the developments of this interesting legislative activity and in view of the official opening on 20 September - concludes the President Certosi - I invite all hunters to behave correctly, to respect regulations, safety and the territory".
