The Italian Confederation of Farmers of Modena and the agricultural associations in a meeting with the Councilor for Agriculture Tomei, presented a detailed protocol for the limitation of 'suidae' in the Apennines. “It is a work program on which we ask for the commitment of the Province, the ATC and the park authorities: we need a permanent coordination table”.
The alarm continues on the excessive presence of ungulates, in particular wild boars, which in the Modena area are causing serious damage to crops and the ecosystem. "The incursions of ungulates and wild boars have become much more invasive in recent weeks - denounces the CIA of Modena - and at the expense of meadows, alfalfa and crops in general, in prestigious areas where animal husbandry is linked to production of Parmigiano Reggiano ".
In a meeting with the provincial councilor for agriculture Giandomenico Tomei the agricultural associations (Cia, Confagricoltura, Coldiretti and Copagri) reported that in the areas of the parks and especially in the ATC Modena 3 (upper Apennines) there was an exponential surge in damage, confirmed by direct testimonies of agricultural entrepreneurs.
"A new strategy is needed to counter the damage that wild boars systematically cause to agricultural crops - continues the CIA - and the urgent and extraordinary activation of all the useful and necessary initiatives for a decisive reduction in the presence of wild boars in order to contain the damage to the crops in progress is needed ”.
Punctual and effective management and, above all, a prevention program are the requests of agricultural organizations “to avoid damage to the Parmesan chain. Action must be taken to obtain a radical and drastic reduction in the number of wild boars by acting with more actions - continues the CIA - such as selection hunting also in protected areas and in the Zrc (Restocking and capture zones), and in any case in all those areas where wild boar can find refuge. Furthermore the hunting calendar must be improved, which allows the collection for longer periods and regardless of the climatic trend - observes the CIA - and the coordination of hunting periods and forms in the neighboring areas of the province of Modena and Bologna ”.
Activation of a "real" competition between hunters, elimination of privileges, co-responsibility, including economic responsibility of hunters in compensation for damages, definition of specific areas with an agricultural vocation on which to act drastically for the eradication of the species, institution of periodic checks of the results obtained and of the censuses with the involvement of agricultural associations: these are just some of the suggestions that farmers have given out loud. Above all, the producers observed, "the damages must be paid for their real amount according to tariffs, which have already been prepared".
"These objectives represent a work program on which we ask for the commitment of the Province, the ATC and the interested park authorities, in addition to that of the hunting associations - concludes the CIA - possibly with the establishment of a permanent and specific work table involving the agricultural associations ”.
The proposals at a glance:
Presence of wild boar and hunting areas - Redefinition of the areas in which the wild boar must be completely eradicated; Presence of wild boars: maximum of 1 wild boar per 200 hectares; Simultaneous adoption of several methods to combat wild boar: (selection hunting, hunted, shot); Sampling and selection hunting in the Atc and also in the park areas, Zrc and wildlife hunting companies (Avf); Possibility of self-defense and shooting for farmers; Periodic and frequent checks of the results obtained with respect to the assigned objectives; Periodic censuses of the presence of wild boars with the involvement of farmers and their representative agricultural associations; Activation of competition between the hunters involved; Encourage competition between harnessing teams, extending in number and areas the hunted areas in the most densely populated areas of wild boars with the assignment of minimum killing targets and relative verification of the achievement of the same; Possible replacement of teams and hunters where the objectives are not achieved; Direct liability of hunters, including economic ones, for failure to comply with the assigned abatement targets and for the consequent damage to crops.
Prevention - "Automatic" and preventive recognition of the areas of endemic presence of wild boar as areas to be subjected to prevention without the need for a formal request by agricultural producers; Implementation and adoption of all prevention systems, in a coordinated way between the ATC, the Province, the Avf and the Park Authorities, promptly agreeing them with the individual farmers concerned; Experimentation also of innovative systems (acoustic bollards, etc.); Health control of culled animals in order to check the health status of the animals and avoid the spread of diseases on farms and among people.
Danni - Adoption of a handbook for the assessment and settlement of direct but also induced damage to crops (such as the loss of the quality of the product and its derivatives and not only of the quantity); Introduction of agronomic and diversified criteria by crop and not only economic and quantitative for damage assessment; Unification of the compensation procedures for damages between the various Bodies (ATC, Province) with the establishment of a one-stop shop for damages; Establishment of joint damage assessment commissions throughout the provincial territory that include all the components involved in the liquidation.
