Hunting: Massa Carrara, Roe deer, 243 specialists on the tracks of roe deer but the snow slows the harvest, open season until 10 March.
The Atc 13 Management Committee of Massa Carrara draws up an initial assessment of the roe deer hunting season which enters the final phase: it will close on 10 March. There are 243 hunter-specialists: 60 animals were killed in the first part of the season. Assemblies of roe deer selection hunters: submission of applications by 18 February. Filippo Merlini, President Atc 13 Ms: “Reaching the most difficult floor with snow”. Roe deer picking more difficult than expected but the picking and bedding plan is starting to bear fruit. The last phase, the winter one, foreseen by the Plan authorized by the Province of Massa Carrara, which allows the 243 roe deer specialists enrolled in the Territorial Hunting Area 13, to hunt also in the winter session from 20 January to 10 March in the 4 assigned districts.
Introduced last year by the Management Committee, this year the winter session was made compulsory following the changes made to our Regional Law and the opinions expressed by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research for an ever greater respect of the times biological species of animal species. Greedy for sprouts, berries, wild fruits and small plants, the containment of the roe deer population is one of the objectives of the Management Committee chaired by Filippo Merlini who in addition had announced the adoption of more effective strategies on ungulates both to limit the damage to agricultural crops but also to limit competition with other species of sedentary small game.
The inclusion of a second opening, the winter one, goes precisely in the direction of improving the hunting effort for the containment of the species according to specific abatement plans in compliance with the biological times of the species. At the end of the summer session (data relating to September) about 60 animals were slaughtered compared to the 186 envisaged by the plan, equal to about 33%. Still far from the objectives but in line with the ambitions. “The data - points out Filippo Merlini, President of the Management Committee - refers only to the summer session where it was not possible to take neither female nor small specimens.
At the end of the season, counting all the difficulties such as snow, the progressive afforestation that make hunting this species more difficult and other environmental factors, we will be able to reach around 50% -60% of the plan. Practically in line with previous seasons ". Roe deer hunting, like all forms of hunting, is prohibited this year in case of snow. "Unfortunately, following the latest changes made to the regional legislation, however in line with the national framework law, in the case of land covered or partially covered with snow, - Merlini specifies - it is no longer possible to take ungulate species (roe deer and wild boar) even at 'internal control plans verified and approved which determined exactly the number of animals to be taken by dividing them, in the case of roe deer, also by sex and age group, all this makes it difficult to reach the plan with imaginal consequences for management ".
According to Paolo Bongi, technician and consultant of the Territorial Hunting Area, the presence of roe deer is very limited compared to other areas of Italy where “Their density exceeds 35 specimens per 100 hectares; in the Province of Massa Carrara we are around 14 specimens per 100 hectares - underlines - and the damage estimate is localized in certain areas; it is not generalized as it is for example for wild boars ”.
The objective for the Territorial Hunting Area is to reach 70% of the collection plan, a goal that has so far only been achieved in some districts and in some years. In defense of the will and efforts of the Apuo-Lunigiana side-by-side shotguns, the late start of the hunting season: "following the aforementioned legislative changes, it began 15 days late - concludes Merlini - the picture will be clearer at the end of March" .
The Committee of the Territorial Hunting Area also informs that the Assemblies of hunters registered in the districts for the selection of roe deer hunting are convened for the day 9 March to proceed, as provided for in Article 9 "Appointment, role and duties of District Coordinators "of the current Regulations Implementing Rules of the Regulations for the Hunting Wildlife Management of Roe Deer in the Province of Massa-Carrara (appr. With Del.CP n. 31 of 28-05-2009) for the 2012-13 hunting season, in the elections of the new District Coordinators and Deputy Coordinators.
