Hunting and Fauna: Perugia, News for the Hunting Territorial Area 2 regarding the repopulation of the Lepre in the territory on scheduled hunting; the distribution of the reproducers of the species is underway.
The news of the Territorial Area of Hunting Perugia 2 (ATC PG2). After the recent inauguration of the new headquarters in via dei Mille 37, in Foligno, the distribution of the hare breeders for the repopulation of the territory with programmed hunting is starting in these days. “The ATC PG2 - explained the president of the institution Luciano Calabresi - has entered into agreements with local breeders who, in the face of a limited production, can make available subjects of excellent quality. On the other hand, in this way we offer these small farms in the area an additional income, as hares are generally not their main agricultural activity. This alone would be sufficient to justify the goodness of the initiative ”. "In the interest of hunters - added Calabresi -, we ask these companies to respect a protocol prepared by our wildlife technicians, aimed at having breeders suitable for release on the territory". The protocol provides that the hares are raised on the ground for the necessary period, that the enclosures have adequate characteristics and dimensions and that the breeding density is maintained at biologically acceptable values. This mechanism should allow ATC PG2 to follow the breeding methods, be informed about the health treatments carried out, constantly monitor the health of the animals and verify their rusticity.
"The policy of turning to local suppliers - commented Calabresi - feeds the economy of the same territory under management and contrasts with the importation of subjects from abroad of dubious origin and quality, potential carriers of diseases unrelated to the local fauna, difficult to adapt to environments and climates so different from those of origin and with high mortality rates during and after transport ".
Another novelty introduced was that the same Atc Pg2 staff was able to go directly to the breeders to choose future breeding stock as early as the end of spring, marking each specimen with a microchip very similar to those used for dogs. “This initiative - said Calabresi -, which required a considerable commitment from us, is perhaps unique in Italy and, at least in Umbria, revolutionizes the approach towards the restocking of game.
In fact, it has allowed continuous monitoring, during captivity, of the animals destined for ATC and in the coming months it will also give the possibility of collecting biological and hunting information on the hares released ”. The first microchipped hares were delivered to hunters. “These - concluded President Calabresi - have shown that they have enthusiastically welcomed our project. However, we remain with our feet firmly on the ground, but this reinforces the idea of being on the right path ”.
