Hunting and Fauna: Pistoia, the Province committed to monitoring migration with the ringing activity for scientific purposes which is repeated for the second consecutive year.
The Province of Pistoia continues to monitor migration, thanks to the collaboration with the COT (Centro Ornithologico Toscano), which for the second consecutive year will carry out the ringing of the ornithological species inside the Dynamo Protection Oasis in Limestre, one of the few Apennine resorts nationwide. The operations, carried out by qualified personnel and under the coordination of ISPRA, will take place from 14 to 28 October. This year an additional ringing station is planned also at the Val di Luce protection area, in the Municipality of Abetone. The station, managed in collaboration with the University of Florence and the Unifauna Association, will have a more didactic purpose, through the involvement of the students of the Florentine university. The operations will take place from 18 to 21 October.
The captured birds will be ringed and subsequently released, after the identification of species and age. The ring has a unique number worldwide and the data collected will be sent to a database managed by the international organization Euring (even in the case of recapturing birds already ringed). The aim of the project is to analyze the movements and verify the consistency of migratory populations.
"When it comes to wild populations of thousands of individuals, who also move from one continent to another, subjected to hunting, it is important to know the impact of this activity through the collection and scientific analysis of data - underlines the 'councilor for policies relating to hunting and fishing, Rino Fragai - The monitoring of migration, through the ringing activity, joins the Migration Project, started this year and sponsored by the Province, which sees the collaboration with the hunting world, to collect objective data on sampling and species monitoring ".
