In the province of Reggio Emilia, a pack of wolves attacks and kills some ungulates that were in a center for the recovery of wildlife.
During the night between Sunday and last Monday a pack of wolves managed to penetrate inside an enclosure where they attacked and killed four ungulates, three roe deer and a fallow deer, which were in hospital at the Refuge Matildico site in the locality of Caverzana, a hamlet of San Polo D'Enza (RE).
With great bitterness, the founder of the CRAS, Ivano Chiapponi, comments on what has happened “These things demoralize us and there is a lot of anger: those were animals that we had treated and healed. They were ready to be released and we were just waiting for the season, fearing some snowfall. With the start of the year we would let them go. But now… ".
Chiapponi then continues, "One of the volunteers noticed everything. When he came to feed the birds, as he does every day, he found the disaster and warned me ”.
From what has been ascertained the traces leave no doubt that the slaughter of animals was the work of wolves. In fact, the predators would have entered the Center from the rio side and would have then dug a hole to pass under the fence inside which the ungulates were locked up. Chiapponi explains, “We no longer kept them in the small boxes, which are more protected, because they were fine by now and so they could eat freely”.
Animals arriving at the CRAS are generally victims of road accidents or other injuries but there is no shortage of children in difficulty that after being brought to safety are raised at the Center until they become autonomous. Chiapponi continues “Among the animals killed there was also a fallow deer, which we had recovered a few nights ago and which had now recovered. At first we thought he had managed to escape, because we hadn't found him. Then, instead, we found his remains on the carriageway near the lake ”.
Regarding the roe deer torn to pieces inside the enclosure, Chiapponi explains, "The roe deer immediately panic in these situations their strength is speed and when free they focus on that. But in the enclosure, when they saw the wolves on them, they must have tried to break through the enclosures by throwing themselves against them. The blow will then have disoriented them ”.
According to Chiapponi, there would be no doubts even on the fact that it was not a single wolf that attacked the animals but a pack of at least four wolves, in fact he says "The veterinarian Ausl di Montecchio came to make an inspection and also for him not there are doubts that it was canids. And I am convinced that there were at least four or five specimens of wolves. This is demonstrated by the fact that the roe deer have devoured them completely. On the neck there are signs of deep wounds caused by the bites ”.
With bitterness in the heart, despite what happened, a completely "natural" fact, the CRAS are busy repairing the damage and continuing the business, as Chiapponi confirms “We must not get attached, because the purpose of the Cras itself is another: to save them and return them to nature once they are healed. But a fact like this hurts the heart ”.
