Hunting and Health: infected wild boars found in the province of Grosseto, a new case of trichinella.
Another case of trichinella found in wild boar meat: a sample taken from a specimen killed in Polverosa, in the municipality of Orbetello, tested positive for the parasite harmful to humans. Cases of human infection with trichinellosis occurred less than a month ago in Garfagnana for the consumption of raw wild boar sausages. In this case, fortunately, there was no infection: the irregularity emerged during routine checks that the food safety sector of the ASL 9 carries out on the processing centers of the hunted game.
"At the moment it is only an isolated episode, however not to be underestimated - explain the health workers of the Asl 9 - as, associated with recent cases in Garfagnana, demonstrates the presence and circulation of the parasite in fauna in Tuscany, with possible risk for humans ". Trichinella is transmitted to humans through the intake of fresh meat of some species (wild boar, pig, horse). The risk exists only if the meat is not subjected to health checks.
As a precaution, ASL 9 and the Province of Grosseto have ordered that for the current hunting season all wild boars hunted in the area deemed infected are subjected to sampling. The risk does not exist instead for the consumption of pork, horse and game regularly slaughtered and placed on the market: here the controls are systematic. In the coming months the ASL 9 will also analyze pigs slaughtered at home.
