Hunting and Migration: ANUU Migrationists on the migration pass in Italy, “a summer to forget”.
A summer to forget because in the month of July we had 13 rainy days at the FEIN Ornithological Observatory of Arosio, which weekly takes care of these information notes on the pass, preparing them with the Coordination Office for environmental protection, ornithological research, ringing of the ANUU Migrators who, in turn, collects them in collaboration with its responsible members in the various regions and, above all, with other foreign ornithological observatories.
And so it was also the month of August when the cloudy days dominated with temperatures below normal levels, slowing down the pace of the first summers who fly south on their migratory journey. It is not time to take stock of these unexciting days, but the presence of the Blackbird and the Green Woodpecker nesting in the area was good. Among the trans-Saharans it is interesting to ring the Bigiarella, the Oriole, the Stiaccino, the spotted Forapaglie, the Torcicollo and the Prispolone.
The first specimen of the latter species in post-nuptial migration was ringed on 18 August. At the end of the month, 55 were ringed, while in 2013 there were 60, 102 in 2012, 75 in 2011 and only 8 in 2010. The movement of the Black Weasels was also interesting, species of which 303 specimens were ringed in August. (537 in 2013, 486 in 2012, 261 in 2011 and 196 in 2010).
In total, 513 individuals belonging to 34 species were ringed in August (in 2013 there were 841 belonging to 33 species, in 2012 889 belonging to 39 species, in 2011 607 belonging to 32 species and in 2010 353 belonging to 31 species). In this regard, it should be remembered that the maximum figure of 190.000 ringed birds has almost been reached in 37 years of continuous and constant study.
