Hunting and Migration. Temperatures dropped sharply after a week, from 14 to 21 November, characterized by heavy fogs but no rain from 28 October, even if there was a light sprinkle of snow on the north-alpine side.
In this context, the Fieldfare they presented themselves in a discreet way compared to previous years. They are still awaited after the full moon of Wednesday 25th, which our elders considered the beginning of the real cold according to an ancient proverb which said “In Santa Caterina he pulls down the woods from the farmhouse”.
If the cold was punctual, certainly not the migratory step delle Cesene was respectful of the dates. But beyond the proverbs and the climate there is to be added to the notes the almost constant presence, albeit numerically reduced, of the song Thrush which more than Redwing has been showing its positive trend for several years now. In this regard, it should be noted that many followers of Diana have always accompanied the presence of the Cesena to that of the Redwing but this year, strangely, a change of habits has been noted for which the Cesena is pairing up with the Song Thrush.
But this is part of the natural game where every prediction can be snubbed by the inhabitants of nature and the beauty for those who live in contact with the natural world is all in these discoveries to be analyzed. As far as the great turdids are concerned, there is news from Greece that the song thrush is no longer present even in those congenial places where it is its habit to winter.
From the south of France, on the other hand, news of a good number of bottacci and Cesene thrushes. How good is the presence in northern Italy of Peppola and Fringuello accompanied, in a more localized way, by the presence of Siskin and Frosone. The week that has just ended has given us some more observations of Snipe and Teal in the places suitable for them.
For the Woodcock there is nothing particular to report. And, while the step is almost complete, the FEIN Ornithological Observatory of Arosio is preparing to analyze the species that will stop over the winter in the coming months through the realization of the Wintering Project, now in its 19th year of development which will begin on 8 December, that is, in the first ten days of this month, which is now a traditional date for this specific activity.
