Controversy on the question of the Reserve of the Pantani Longarini, the Sicilian marsh area located in the districts of Ispica (RG) and Pachino (SR); Gennuso wants clarity from the Region.
The Sicilian regional parliamentarian, Giuseppe Gennuso, replies to the news leaked in recent days after the meeting between some Syracusan deputies, the regional councilor for the environment, Alessandro Aricò and the director of the department Giovanni Arnone, and states "They cannot be redefined the boundaries of zone B of the Pantani Longarini beyond a certain limit, as one would like to believe ".
Continuing, Gennuso explains, "The alleged agreement seems more like a demagogic exit to curry favor with the agricultural world to the detriment of the hunting one, given that the Environment Department states that Zone A, which includes the stretches of water, is untouchable, precluding hunting to the aquatic ones, strongly traditional in these parts. In this way we would like to pass off as environmentalism the waste of public money that the management of a nature reserve entails, moreover to the detriment of the economy of the area with the loss of jobs in the agricultural, hunting and entrepreneurial department ".
According to Gennuso, the establishment of the reserve would represent a further and useless public expenditure as the area is already identified among the "Natura 2000" sites, therefore as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and as a Site of Community Interest (SIC), where both hunting and agricultural activities are well regulated in a restrictive manner by the national decree of 17 October 2007, therefore a territory already well protected.
Commenting on the issue, Gennuso affirms, "The impression that emerges from the latest rumors is that we are trying to avoid the four appeals to the TAR of Catania for the annulment of the decree, set for December 5 and promoted by the hunting associations, by the farmers of the IGP consortium of Pachino, by private entrepreneurs and even by the Municipality of Pachino ".
With regard to the appeals of the Catania TAR, the regional parliamentarian explains, “These appeals have a good chance of being accepted for various reasons. The decree establishing the reserve, meanwhile, had to be issued within one year of the decree approving the regional plan of parks and reserves No. 970/91, and instead arrived well beyond the maximum time, when the territories identified for the institution of the reserve have now undergone significant modifications, such as to make them lose all the necessary requisites required by the regional law of parks and reserves. Furthermore, this decree could not be signed by the director of the Department, but by the competent regional councilor ”.
Concluding Gennuso criticizes, “Finally, a patchwork reserve, consisting of several non-neighboring territories, is not very suited to the balanced management of a territory”.
