Hunting and Territory: Trento, the Ledro hunters oppose the Reserves with a referendum expressing the will to maintain control over the management of the territory.
Although it is the leader, the Municipality of Ledro risks being excluded from the activity of the Network of Reserves of the Ledro Alps before the start of its activity. It will be if the last request of one of the groups that have promoted initiatives against the inclusion of a large part of the mountain territory of the Ledro valley in the newly established Reserve and in that of the Unesco Biosphere is realized. The other day a request was presented to the Committee of Guarantors of the Municipality of Ledro and to the mayor Achille Brigà to call a popular referendum for the cancellation of the resolution of the city council of last September 3, which had approved the program agreement aimed at activation of the Alpi Ledrensi Reserve Network. In addition to the Municipality of Ledro (leader), the future organization will involve those of Riva del Garda, Bondone, Tenno and Storo, the assemblies of the Alto Garda and Ledro and Giudicarie communities, the Asuc di Storo, the Bim del Sarca and the Chiese.
The anti-Reserves document was signed by the valley president of the Consulta della Caccia and by the heads of the six Ledrense sections of hunters, who are awaiting a positive response to start the complex bureaucratic process to call the popular consultation. The referendum promoters are convinced that their initiative will be successful considering the 1.839 adhesions to the petition with which last autumn they wanted to prevent the involvement of the Municipality of Ledro in the Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
The subscribers constituted the majority of the voters of Ledro (about 3.300 out of the 5.400 inhabitants) for an organization with very similar analogies to the “Alpi Ledrensi” Network of Reserves. According to the supporters of the referendum, the main reason that pushes the local population to express opposition to the two new bodies is the determination not to delegate to external bodies but to keep the management of the territory in Ledrense hands as it is, with results considered excellent, by centuries.
"Our initiative is also motivated by the modification of the provincial law on forests and nature protection - the presenters of the referendum request point out - because if the Network of Reserves involves reserves bordering natural parks, it is the case of Ledro, the plan of management is drawn up in accordance with the park plan. Various "cans" are added to integrate further compliance measures. In conclusion, our valley is destined to be safeguarded, but at the same time “mummified” with consequent economic and social deleterious effects for a territory already penalized by geographic isolation ”. Then there is a challenge to the municipal council whose majority approved membership in the Network of Reserves ignoring the involvement of fellow citizens and their orientation.
