Hunting: a coordination table for the management of wild ungulates has been set up in the Province of Asti.
In order to verify the situation of the excessive proliferation, reported by many, of wild ungulates in the provincial territory, the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Province of Asti Alberto Ardia has set up the “Wild ungulate coordination table”. The Table is made up of the Province, the Prefecture, the State Forestry Corps, the Piedmont Region, Territorial Areas of Hunting, Professional Agricultural Organizations, Hunting Associations, Protected Areas Management Bodies and Environmental Wildlife Surveillance Agents. The first session took place on Tuesday 5 November. “The body - said the Commissioner - was established on the basis of requests received from the mayors of Asti in agreement with the Prefect. The Municipalities highlighted the need to adopt incisive measures to counter the effects that the wild boar and roe deer populations cause on the provincial territory: high damage to agricultural crops, car accidents, safety problems in general ".
Paolo Guercio, manager of the Agriculture and Food Service, informed those present that the Authority is following the problem carefully: "Already at the end of the last hunting season - he specified - incisive interventions had been carried out on the wild boar population, which had yielded results satisfactory. However, attention must be kept high, also by monitoring the activity carried out by the wild boar hunting teams operating in the area, to ensure that the sampling throughout the hunting season leads to the desired effects ".
Commissioner Ardia undertook to represent the requests of the members of the Table to the Regional Councilor for hunting, in particular: to allow wild boar hunting in the area covered by snow; to release the hunting of roe deer from the sampling plans, as happens for the wild boar; allocate the resources received from the registration of hunters primarily for the compensation of damage caused to agricultural crops by wildlife.
The Table will be reconvened at the end of November, to monitor the trend of the phenomenon and at the same time evaluate the proposal of the Province to authorize the "selecontrollers" and the Voluntary Hunting Guards in possession of the qualification for selection hunting, to carry out containment interventions , in collaboration with the security agents, with rifle and sight optics at night, from a car with the aid of the lighthouse, in the provincial territory where the need arises. At the end of the meeting, the participants expressed their appreciation for the initiative, which was considered very effective in managing this delicate problem, which requires the commitment of all members to achieve the set objectives.
