A responsibility that is not only legal
The Council of State, with an ordinance, rejected the precautionary request of the Lombardy Region regarding the hunting ban on 475 regional mountain passes, postponing the issue to the decision on the merits of October 9. “In general,” says the regional councilor for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests, Alessandro Beduschi, “the Lombardy Region avoids commenting on the decisions of the Judiciary. However, faced with a provision that confirms the hunting ban on 475 mountain passes in Lombardy, we cannot avoid noting that this choice entails a responsibility that is not only legal in nature, but also social, territorial and environmental. In our opinion, the rights of the hunting world are being trampled upon, which – until proven otherwise – carries out a legal and regulated activity. Even more serious is the fact that the ban also concerns the hunting of ungulates, precisely when the containment of wild fauna, in particular wild boar, represents a priority health and environmental need.”
African swine fever
“Denying containment activities in mountain areas – continues Councilor Beduschi – means weakening every effort to stop the spread of African swine fever, a real threat to a region that raises over 50% of Italian pigs”.
Shocking assessments
“Finally, it is striking – he concludes – to read in the motivation of the ordinance that 'there is no evidence that the wild boars present in the mountain passes are carriers of PSA': an assessment that leaves one sincerely disconcerted, because nothing will prevent infected wild boars present today in Lombardy from also taking the opposite route, from our passes towards the outside. It is also a question of having a sense of responsibility towards the bordering territories and in this way we are prevented”. (Source LNews)
