Nature tells wonderful and dramatic stories to those who know how to listen to it - The desire to hunt was, as always, strong, the closing dinner, lavish and abundant, had not quenched the desire. We went with Mauro, one of the canai to trace some hypothesis of wild boar. I stopped the car on the side of the dirt road that mostly turned inside the company. We immediately went down to take a look at the sides of a gully full of brambles and partly of butcher's broom: the traces of wild boar were numerous and very fresh. goes out.
The boar is inside. It is big but there are other smaller tracks of various sizes, we hope that there is not also a female with the puppies ». We walked a little longer to other locations where there were traces of other animals and reunited with the others. It was decided to go to the first big spot with a single dog, little Toby, a fine-nosed mongrel who easily barks at a stop, perhaps then to continue towards the banks of the large moat that divides the company in two, a well protected area where on the south side there may be some wild boar that dries up and warms up in the sun after so many days of rain and cold this year in anticipation of the upcoming spring.
Said made in seven or eight in all, we surround the large block where we had seen the traces. As soon as Toby arrives on the edge he starts barking and Mauro warns: «Watch out, watch out, there's the wild boar! It's right below! ». I turn my eyes upwards and see a female boar, a harness, moving upwards between the butcher's broom followed by a good number of small striped. I also shouted into the cell phone: "Be careful, don't shoot, it's a strap with linen straps." Meanwhile, I move upwards where the other hunters are, so the animal does not come out from above and comes back. In front of him someone excited shouts: "There is also a boar!" (but it wasn't true!). In the meantime, I hear short grunts coming from the thicket, I approach to look at a wire fence that surrounded it when a black and frosted strap comes out from underneath with its mouth open and dripping with saliva, ears erect and a swollen mane. , some striped wild boar next to me, comes quickly to attack me, I don't want to shoot but out of caution I point the rifle at her shouting: "Go, go, go away!" he arrives about two meters and I think: "if he gets closer I am forced to shoot otherwise he will throw me on the ground".
Luckily for her and mine, she finally reacts to the screams, turns around and re-enters the clump. The emotion was very strong, seeing the angry belt with the swollen mane leaving a safe place trying to attack me was an unrepeatable and beautiful show also for the demonstration of courage and maternal love of an animal that overcomes fear and its own extreme wildness coming out to defend the children. It was as if time had stopped centuries ago and in that moment, the ancient and mutual struggle of man against the wild nature that wins or succumbs without hatred or fear but with love and respect was repeated. The two deer The hunt does not end here, so let's go and beat another area directly on the sides of the great moat. I place myself at the bottom near the water even if I am slightly disturbed by the friendly noise of small transparent waterfalls, I hear the dogs barking above, but I understand that it is still a strap with the little ones and I am not alarmed.
Suddenly I hear a thud with something metallic coming out of the woods, I think: «It must be a wild boar caught in a steel lace». The noise repeats becomes louder almost desperate I enter the woods and I can see some dark brown fur that moves quickly vibrating, I still think of a boar trap, I approach with the gun pointed while my heart is beating fast: they are two deer attacked due to the large webbed horns that try to free themselves and move sprawl, moreover it blocks them and also entangles a barbed iron fence. I start to shoot but I think about it and I get closer again: not only are the horns wedged but around them there is a cord of those used to tie the rolls of hay or straw that has bound them inexorably in their useless struggle for the salvation. Maybe they see me, and they try even more, but in vain to struggle to escape, they jump in the air from one side to the other, remaining indissolubly entangled.
I find myself in front of another incredible show! So I call my companions in some way: "Come and see, come and see!" Egiziano arrives immediately, a young and strong friend who works as a traffic policeman as well as a hunter, approaches and watches the show and also calls Mauro the canaio. With the help of both of us, we try to free the terrified fallow deer that jump sprawl hitting the barbed wire, seriously injuring themselves. Some dogs also arrive and rush on the fallow deer barking and biting them. With great difficulty we manage to cut the cord that over the horns was forever joining the beautiful animals that finally freed they can barely stand up trying to escape but after taking a few steps one on one side to the other they fall exhausted and wounded for which we are forced to finish them. Meanwhile, all the other friends arrive commenting and watching: the two fallow deer are finally quiet in the death that we had caused out of pity and love of nature, trying to avoid them a useless and extraordinary end due to hunger and hardship that they would have suffered by remaining connected. The expulsion ended in some way, on the one hand very exciting and on the other cruel, with a few shots but many words. Finally, among all of us we said to each other: "See you next year if fate will allow it!"
