Clearance imminent
The meeting promoted by the agriculture and hunting department and the competent regional offices, with the Tuscan hunting associations and the ATC coordination, was held yesterday afternoon - 26 June - in Florence, in which the main aspects, contents and critical issues that will characterize the new regional hunting calendar for the 2024/2025 season which will be approved in the coming weeks by the Regional Council. At the center of the presentation were highlighted the critical issues that the competent offices intended to underline, with respect to an overall structure of the text which essentially remains unchanged compared to previous years in the fundamental choices relating to the species that can be hunted, the harvesting times and the various provisions of provincial. In particular, some important aspects for the quality of the provision were introduced and discussed regarding the possible postponement of the opening date of the hunt from the third to the fourth Sunday of September, the elimination of the "buffer" between suitable and unsuitable areas for wild boar hunting and above all, the inclusion of the wild dove (Streptopelia turtur) as a species that can be harvested in pre-opening given the limitations imposed by Europe and by an uneven application recorded by the Regions in the respective hunting calendars approved up to now or in progress of approval.
The problems exposed
The president of Federcaccia Toscana – UCT Marco Salvadori, who participated in the meeting together with the member of the Regional Presidency Office Alfonso Lenzoni, did not mince words to represent, with clarity and a wealth of arguments, the association's position on the issues exposed and more generally, on the aspects concerning the investigation of the measures and the concertation methods necessary for their approval. Salvadori, in fact, already in the premises of his speech recalled the need to reconnect the threads of the preliminary discussion on the documents and resolutions on the matter, allowing the association, in the general interest, the possibility of producing proposals, contributions, observations and technical-scientific material to support the choices that will be made autonomously by the Region. The hunting calendar is just one of the main aspects that affect the quality of the hunting proposal in Tuscany and guarantee legal certainty for hunters.
General opening
It will also be necessary to make up for delays in order to reach a rapid approval of the calendar. On the merits of the aspects raised by the offices, the position of FIDC-UCT was clear and unequivocal. A firm no to any proposal to postpone the general opening date of the hunt from the third to the fourth Sunday of September. An unmotivated proposal as far as respect for the decades of overlap is concerned and in the absence of further more incisive measures, it is also marginal from a management point of view. Also with regards to the proposal to eliminate the so-called buffer or buffer zone between areas suited to wild boar and those not suited to wild boar, the opposition expressed was clearly argued as this predominantly management tool allowed the ATC to organize the collection of the species with flexibility in the various territories, avoiding conflicts and tensions with the organized teams and with the districts of the suitable areas. Finally, the problem relating to the harvesting of wild doves in pre-opening was addressed, given the limitations on the quota that can be harvested resulting from a distorted and forced application of the key concepts and other factors.
The Toscaccia app
Without prejudice to the conduct of the two days of pre-opening to opportunistic species and exception species, the proposal for a possible ban on the harvesting of wild doves is not understood. The choices made at the time by the Region, with the mandatory introduction of the Toscaccia app hunting card for the collection of the species, today place Tuscany in a privileged and advanced position compared to other regions. The possibility of certifying the withdrawal of the assigned quota puts us in a position to guarantee a retraction at the ministerial level and in the same state-regional conference on the maximum quota of assigned animals, avoiding unmotivated and further reductions compared to the previous year and the consequent withdrawal on the dates of pre-opening. Despite this, the need to maintain the species in the list of huntable species included in the calendar was expressed. A position also strengthened by the intervention of the Vice President of ANUU Migrationists - Terfiro Innocenti - in full agreement with the arguments expressed. It will be our association's responsibility to send in the next few hours detailed technical-scientific material supplementing the elaboration premises of the calendar also regarding the dates and times of sampling of some other species of hunting interest.
