New techniques
Technology changes the world of wildlife management. The “revolution” will be presented to “Hunting, fishing, nature”, national fair of products and services for hunting, fishing and outdoor activities, taking place at Longarone Fiere Dolomiti from 12 to 14 April (Friday 14.30pm-19pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-19pm). We start with wildlife censuses, which can rely on new techniques. In particular on the use of camera traps, thermal cameras and drones, to paint a much more precise picture of the ungulate populations present in a given territory. The Province of Belluno, together with the Veneto Region, has started an experimental project on roe deer which will be presented at a conference on Saturday 13 April, at 9.45am, at the Congress Centre. Under the lens of "The European Observatory of Wildlife", a project to test not only the presence of fauna and the size of a population of animals, but also the state of health.
The health risk
At the same conference, particular attention will also be paid to the topic of African swine fever and the management of wild boar, a species that has now spread throughout the Belluno mountains and is subject to health risks if not adequately controlled. The Veneto Region has launched a regional plan of urgent interventions specifically for wild boar control and will present the situation in the province of Belluno. Also with a valorization perspective deriving from control plans, given that wild boars can become a resource if included in the meat processing chain.
Hunter's Feast
“Hunting, fishing, nature 2024” will also put the spotlight on the topic of climate change, in a course open to all and dedicated mainly to information professionals, organized by the Veneto Journalists Union, Assostampa Belluno and by the Province of Belluno and the Region of Veneto. “Climate change, nature and accurate journalism: how the wildlife of the Dolomites is changing and how wildlife-hunting management adapts” is the title of the meeting, scheduled for Friday 12th at 15pm at the Congress Center. An exceptional speaker was the climatologist Luca Mercalli, a television face and guest on various national programmes. For the entire duration of "Hunting, fishing, nature" the Hunter's Festival will be active, now in its 27th edition. Pavilion E will host the display of trophies from the 2023-2024 hunting season, as well as food stands offering typical traditional Belluno dishes.
