Hunting in Puglia - the resolution that regulates the levy notwithstanding the transfers until January 31, 2010 by the Board of the Puglia Region.
The CIA (Italian Farmers Confederation) Puglia expresses its appreciation for the act adopted by the regional executive, because it will certainly put a stop to the already substantial damage caused to agricultural crops, and in particular to olive and horticultural ones, which occurred in the weeks and in recent days in large areas of the regional territory by the "Sturnus vulgaris", more commonly known as canceled.
"Since the first reports of damage that we have received from Apulian farmers - declares the regional vice president of Cia Puglia Donato Petruzzi -, caused by the starlings, we asked the Regional Councilorship for agri-food resources to find an immediate solution to the problem, allowing the derogation from the hunting of the starling, as happened in the last hunting season. We must acknowledge councilor Stèfano for having accepted our requests by deliberating, in the meeting of the council of 1 December, the derogation from starling hunt. A measure that, at least, will significantly reduce the already considerable damage caused by this bird to agricultural crops, and in particular to olive groves and vegetables. It is, however, a buffer measure pending the European Union's decision to hunt Sturnus vulgaris ”.
As for the abatement plan of the transfer on the hunting in Puglia, it is allowed to take no more than 20 heads per day for a maximum limit of 180 specimens of canceled for the whole season for each license holder. The first useful day for the removal of the starling is next December 5th and it can be carried out only and exclusively by stalking throughout the territory intended for programmed hunting, with the exception of woods and reeds. Subsequently, the days for the collection of transfers, allowed until January 31, 2010, are those provided for by hunting calendar 2009/2010.
