Hunting Trips: Not everyone knows the wonderful island of Gotland, yet when you discover it you are completely entranced and visiting it, traveling it, discovering it becomes a real thrill. It happened to me just like that and that's why I can't exempt myself from the duty to tell you about my hunting experience which was a succession of unforgettable emotions.
As often happens, it all started surfing the internet. I was looking for some surprising little place to propose to Davide, my hunting friend and in the end my efforts paid off. It must have been two in the morning of a rather cold April when I took a look at the first photos of this spectacular land. Quite famous as once the heart of the Viking nation, from a hunting point of view it is practically unknown. From the enthusiasm I woke up my wife who is a great travel enthusiast. Seeing her enthusiastic too, I realized that it was the right trip, Davide and I would have hunted, she and Mara would have dedicated themselves to their usual explorations.
Everything was done in a very short time and in no time we found ourselves in Visby, the capital of the island. The Baltic Sea impregnates the surroundings with a humidity to which we are not used to living in the mountains, but which we do not regret right away. We only perceived similar scents in Stockholm, which is only a 30-minute flight from the island of Gotland. Visby immediately appeared to us pretty, small and not at all chaotic. It is the largest inhabited center with about 21 inhabitants, and the Viking atmosphere is still fully breathed today. My wife and friend immediately organized a number of crazy excursions, to discover the ancient past of the island, David and I instead, needless to say, we dove headfirst into our hunting adventure.
To begin with, the description of the territory is a must: imagine immense natural fir forests, beautiful plains cultivated with cereals, a countryside little modified by man and you will immediately have a vague idea of the beauty of the place. This dream natural habitat is inhabited by several ungulates, first of all roe deer, and wild boars and the woods are home to woodcocks, black grouse, gray partridge, pheasants and hares.
The first evening passes rather quietly: our guests are very kind and the wooden cottage that hosts us is literally immersed in a vast green area. A beneficial daydream. The first day of hunting starts quite early; the appointment is for five in the morning and Davide and I certainly don't make us wait. Oscar, the hunter who guides us, has Argentine origins, and immediately tells us that we will have to walk. We walk without fuss in the company of my pointer and my partner's setter. Everything is expected, but after about forty minutes of walking the first fir forest appears in front of us. It was enough to make our entrance to see the enthusiasm of the dogs. Woodcocks, certainly in step, were certainly not lacking and the dogs immediately proved to be quite capable. The setter, a new member of the family, has had the opportunity to accumulate great experience, nibbling, in three fabulous hunting days, the role he deserves in the group. Davide and I, for our part, brought home, every evening, game bags that were numerically not exciting but sweaty and therefore quite precious. Anyone who reaches the island of Gotland soon discovers that the important thing here is not so much the quantity, but the quality. And during the 16 kilometers of walking, to return home we talked about it for a long time.
The following days were dedicated to rabbit hunting and on the last day we tried our hand at wild boar hunting: a hard work but well rewarded, I assure you. The return home was melancholy and for everyone it seems to have arrived too soon: we will always remember the island's game, its fir woods and that night sky that is a paradise of distant and bright stars. My advice? One evening of these take a look, on the internet, at the island of Gotland, there are those who have defined it as the island of God!
