The American Water Spaniel is a very good hunter in rough waters, in woods and on uneven terrain. It is especially used in hunting other, quail, pheasant, capercaillie and wild rabbit. This breed is also highly regarded as a guard and companion dog.
The American Water Spaniel is a breed originating from the United States of America, the latter recognized by the American Kennel Club only in 1940, the year in which the first specimen of this breed, "Tidewater Teddy", was also registered. The American Water Spaniel obtained the recognition of the International Cynotechnic Federation in 1979. Very popular in the USA, in the old continent it is not particularly widespread. In the selection of the breed the “Irish Water Spaniel” and the “Curly-coated Retriver” were crossed.
As far as the aesthetic aspect is concerned, we are dealing with a medium-sized dog, with a solid appearance, characteristic of the Spaniel. Its coat is curly, responsive and athletic
The character of the American Water Spaniel is quite balanced. It appears as a very calm dog and is very rewarding when destined for company. Particularly suitable for being close to children, with whom he is very patient and affectionate. The American Water Spaniel really enjoys being the center of attention and playing, being jovial and sociable. With strangers he is immediately available to establish a good relationship, without showing himself suspicious or aggressive. The height varies from 38 cm to 46 cm at the shoulder, while the weight is between 13 kg to 20 kg for males and 11 kg and 18 kg for females. It has a well developed trunk, a solid but not too compact structure. With a very deep but not excessively broad chest, it has a very open rib cage. The head and the muzzle are of moderate length, the skull is rather broad and compact, the stop quite defined but not too pronounced. The teeth are firm and aligned, with no upper or lower prognathism. The neck is round, of medium length, strong and muscular, while the ears are long and wide, lobe-shaped, above the line of the eyes.
The eyes can be hazel, brown or dark, depending on the coat, set well apart, giving the American Water Spaniel an alert, friendly and intelligent expression. The limbs are sturdy and well proportioned, featuring thick pads which allow this breed to adapt to the most difficult terrains. The tail is of balanced length, slightly curved in the shape of a cradle and is carried slightly below the line of the back, becoming very mobile when the dog is in action. The hair is curly all over the body.
