Hunting: Massa Carrara, in Lunigiana small game is at risk of extinction; “special” areas are needed to breed partridges, pheasants and hares.
From the conference promoted by the Atc 13 Management Committee of Massa Carrara, the proposal to create Areas for Rationalization of Hunting Collection and areas of particular value. Identified 9 potential areas to undertake a "different" management path. The goal: to find suitable conditions and habitats to enter small sedentary game. From theory to practice: open debate in the hunting world. Areas for rationalization of hunting: the debate is open. After studies on habitats, precise and advanced censuses, in-depth studies and environmental analyzes, the Territorial Hunting Area 13 proposes the creation of specific areas with rational collection to favor the reproduction of native species and to rationalize the withdrawals during the opening period of the hunt.
The future of hunting goes from hunting rationalization areas hare, to partridges and to pheasants, in general to the small sedentary, species that in the meantime have disappeared from the territory and that the Atc 13 is "forced" to enter every season to allow members to take hunting. Started in 2009 and financed by the Finalized Plans of the Province of Massa Carrara, the presentation of the results, some amazing, was entrusted to the crowded conference "The New Frontier of Management" which was held on Saturday 2 March in the conference room of the Terrarossa Castle. , in Licciana Nardi.
The Councilor for the Municipality of Licciana Nardi, Pietro Benetti and the Manager of the Rural and Forest Planning Sector of the Province of Massa Carrara, Gianluca Barbieri, took part in the conference. Moderator of the day Roberto Verzanini. Nine "hypothetical" areas identified (Amola, Antona, Arlia, Casola, Logarghena, Magra, Molinatico, Olivola, Zeri) which have demonstrated, after careful evaluation, satisfactory parameters and suitable conditions to begin a process of "experimentation" also in the perspective of the policy of cuts that will inevitably also fall on hunting management in Tuscany.
The environmental factors such as the drastic disappearance of the agricultural area that has given way to the uncontrolled expansion of the forest, an unsuitable habitat for hares, pheasants and partridges that need large spaces, have a heavy impact on the progressive and slow disappearance of small stationary game. open. But climate change, the impact of predation and hunting are also affected. "The great challenge is to bring back the noble sedentary game to our territories and to do so - explained Johnny Fiorentini, member of the Management Committee, presenting the reasons that led the Atc 13 to deepen a study on the areas with rationalized collection - management is needed different.
The identification of areas that, due to their environmental characteristics, are more suitable for the survival of small sedentary game are an option that we can no longer discard ". The project of the Areas for rationalization of hunting for hunting foresees the "circumscription" of some areas which, due to particular conditions, favor the proliferation of some species (in this case the small sedentary game) in a completely autonomous and natural way. Providing the possibility of establishing these areas is the regional legislation which gives the possibility to the ATC to foresee "possible limitations and rationalization actions of the hunting collection for specific forms of hunting". This does not mean that you will not be able to hunt within these areas but that the collection will be controlled.
Within these areas, explained Umberto Cavini, wildlife technician "it is possible to experiment with introduction techniques and innovative management techniques such as measuring the withdrawal based on the population present, activating environmental improvement actions and containing the antagonistic species in an effective way. Lunigiana - he began - has a favorable habitat for wild boar, but not for small sedentary game ”. The studies conducted by the agronomist Stefano Ulivi and the technician Paolo Bongi now allow the Atc 13 to pass “from theory to practice”.
A delicate phase of debate now opens in the world of hunting and wildlife management: “The areas with rationalization of hunting are an opportunity for the wildlife management system of the territory”.
