Hunting al Lupo in Abruzzo. The Councilor for Agricultural Policies, Dino Pepe, regarding the contents of the "Plan of Action of the Wolf" of the Ministry of the Environment which provides, if certain conditions are met, the possibility of exceptions to the slaughter with the authorization of the wolf, said: "In Abruzzo there are no conditions for a selective killing of wolves".
Councilor Pepe specified “Currently in Abruzzo the estimated population of wolves it amounts to 350 specimens, of which 2/3 gravitates in the areas of the parks in which no derogation is allowed. However, it is important to underline that the Abruzzo Region has set itself the problem of compensation to be paid to agricultural entrepreneurs for damage caused by wolves and wild boars, increasing the related budget item to 750 thousand euros ”.
"It is one of the few budget items - said Pepe continued - which recorded an increase in income confirming the topicality of the problem and the need for the council to meet the farmers, but at the moment it is not possible to foresee a selective killing of the wolf". The issue of damages and related compensation "is also envisaged in the Regional Development Plan with specific actions and as an additional tool for emergency situations".
On the national level, however, the Plan must be definitively approved at the State-Regions Conference and "it is appropriate that in that forum - concluded Councilor Pepe - the Regions express their problems on a regional scale both in terms of conservation of species and mitigation of conflicts between the presence of the wolf and some anthropogenic activities ".
