FACE (Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation of the EU) and the CIC (International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation) have expressed all their concerns ahead of the next one Conference of the Parties (the seventeenth to be precise) of CITES which will be there in September a Johannesburg, in South Africa. Both have therefore decided to explain what they think of the draft proposals that have been circulating so far.
FACE and CIC criticized, in particular, the new rules that will govern the international transfers of hunting trophies, deemed not very proportionate and in open contradiction with the convention. Indeed, it was decided to add new conditions regarding imports, such as financial, administrative and scientific burdens that will be placed on exporting countries, many of which are in development and therefore unable to bear other expenses.
The federation and the council believe these problems are much more serious than those "Relatively minor which are believed to be caused by hunting trophies". These same trophies, marketed only in small quantities, would be subject to conditions that for the moment are not covered by theAppendix II of the species with regards to trading in large volumes. The appeal was therefore addressed to the member states of the European Union, urged not to support the proposals just explained to maintain the advantages that local communities in developing countries have in terms of sustainable hunting.
