The balance of the last 14 years
“Given that since 2010 we have completed over 2 billion and 100 million euros of works with over 3.000 construction sites, the challenge now for Veneto is the 5.000 km of embankments that we have to diaphragm and make safe because they are put at risk by wild animals, such as badgers and nourish, which have turned the banks into Gruyere cheese. We need to realize that the challenge is no longer dealing with the overflow of water in the event of a flood, which can be resolved with retention basins, but with the breaching of the banks. I remember that in 2010, 32 banks were breached. We have fixed 50 km of banks and have projects for 180 million euros for another 80 km. We must not put citizens' lives at risk to protect wildlife".
The point of the situation
This was stated by the President of the Region Luca Zaia who this morning, together with the Councillor for the Environment and Hydrogeological Instability Gianpaolo Bottacin, took stock of the situation regarding the state of implementation for the safety of hydraulic infrastructures.
Lamination basins
"We have built 10 of the 23 planned retention basins - Zaia specified - 10 basins that can contain 21 million cubic meters of water, which will become 210 million cubic meters with the completion of the missing basins. These are numbers that tell us that we have worked well but it is not enough to let us sleep soundly. Now, I repeat, the challenge is to secure the embankments and we need tools to be able to do so given that we are talking about 5.000 km of embankments under the jurisdiction of the Region plus another 3.000 of the Civil Engineers, who, together with the regional managers and technicians, I thank for their work and continuous collaboration to guarantee the safety of our territory" (source: Veneto Region).
