On 26 June they were released in the municipal area of racalmuto, in the province of Agrigento, 6 specimens of wild rabbit, all equipped with radio-collar. This is a project carried out by the Sicilian regional section of the Hunting Federation: the moment was very important, taking into account the presence of the leaders of the hunting association, wildlife technicians and managers.
The initiative was born from the collaboration between the Wildlife Hunting Division of Agrigento, thePermanent Fauna Office of the national Federcaccia, the Agrigento provincial section of the association, the municipal section of Racalmuto, in addition to the University of Palermo, theExperimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sicily, Studio Agrofauna and APS of Agrigento. The rabbits are vaccinated, equipped with the aforementioned radio collar and placed in an area of quarantine before the liberation in Racalmuto.
The area in question is also tabulated and forbidden to hunt for at least 12 months. This prohibition will be detailed in the regional hunting calendar 2017-2018. Over the next few weeks there will be other monitoring: the wild rabbit is widespread throughout the island, although not as abundantly as in the past. The land changes, intensive agriculture and various diseases contributed to this decline.
