A weekend of great cynophilia
It took place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th January 2025 at the ZAC DOC in Montalto Uffugo managed by the Italian Hunting Federation of Cosenza the first stage of the zootechnical checks for hare hunting dogs of the II Magna Grecia Trophy 2025. The event, born from the idea of a group of passionate hounds and hare working trials, linked by a long and consolidated friendship, strongly desired by the provincial sections of the Italian Hunting Federation of Brindisi, Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone who asked for and obtained the approval of the dog groups of Rende, Brindisi, Catanzaro and Crotone and of the specialized societies of the Pro Segugio of the aforementioned provinces, aims to improve dog breeds with the intent of enhancing the tradition of hare hunting and strengthening the collaboration between the Dog Groups, the Pro Segugio, the Federcaccia and the hunters of this beautiful hunting activity which sees the dog-hunter duo as the protagonist.
The diary of the day
The expert ENCI judges Franco D'Aquaro, Gennaro Trapuzzano, Marcello Canonaco and Paolo Cerra were employed to carry out the work of judges. The diary of the day of Saturday 18 January records a singular winter climate with a sky covered by clouds, with temperatures above 18 degrees and ground soaked by rain that fell until dawn; the registration of a couple led by Mr. Giuseppe Arcuri, of seven packs led by Domenico Campise, Domenico Piscitelli, Roberto Macrì, Eduardo Carnevale, Massimo Bencivenni, Fernando Scalera, Luigi Vito Esposito, Francesco Bersini and Luigi Rizzo. In summary, in most of the shifts, the good morphology and breed style were appreciated, the passion of the dogs in the search for hares, the connection between auxiliaries and handlers, the good work on the pasture and the expressiveness of the voice, unfortunately without a flush.
Excellent performance
The friendship of the competitors and the organizers was sealed by a lunch consumed at the Santa Caterina farmhouse in Montalto Uffugo with typical dishes and products of the house offered by the provincial section of Federcaccia di Cosenza. The news of Sunday 19 January reports a typical winter climate with temperatures below 10 degrees with a clear sky and wet ground from the rain of the previous day, overall a typical day for the area and for hare hunting. The dogs submitted for judgement are two couples presented by Giuseppe Arcuri and Domenico Piscitelli and six packs presented by Domenico Campise, Roberto Macrì, Eduardo Carnevale, Massimo Bencivenni, Domenico Contito and Luigi Rizzo, who confirmed the excellent performances of Saturday, both in the method of searching for hares and for the contiguity with the handlers, the good work on the scent, the expressiveness of the voice and the sportsmanship of the owners of the dogs.
The next test
Two packs that made us relive the emotion of the hunt, the beautiful melody of the dogs' voices and the chase of the hare, that of Mr. Eduardo Carnevale composed of the Italian smooth-haired hounds Amerika, Bimba, Andromeda and Naila, who won first place with the qualification of Excellent with 170,25 points and the second place, also with the qualification of Excellent, with 163,66 points of Mr. Luigi Rizzo assisted by Luigi Pignanelli and composed of the Italian smooth-haired hounds Saro, Nilo, Mora, Leo, Sara and Lady Marian. At the time of the awards ceremony, after thanking the Presidents of the dog groups and specialized companies of the Pro Segugio involved in the stages of the event, the competitors, the judges, the President of the Pro Segugio of Cosenza and the companions and the renewal of the invitation to participate in the second test of the Trophy that will be organized in the province of Catanzaro on Saturday and Sunday 8 and 9 February 2025 and before enjoying the tasting of the lunch, it was hoped for 2026 to involve the enthusiasts of this noble passion of the other provinces of Calabria and Puglia and to invite friends from Basilicata and Campania to increase participation and compete in a spirit of healthy competition with the aim of enhancing the hare tests, increasing knowledge and the typicality of the various breeds of hounds, enhancing the hunting skills of the dogs and above all safeguarding the culture and history of hare hunting.
