The value of hunting
In recent days Federcaccia Modena together with the Emilia-Romagna regional Federcaccia hosted a conference dedicated to the value of hunting in Italy, an opportunity to illustrate the results on this topic of the research carried out by the research company Nomisma. During the initial greetings, the President of FIdC Modena Moreno Conti underlined the importance of opening an in-depth dialogue between all stakeholders, emphasizing the need for training, dissemination and communication of our activities and knowledge also towards seemingly distant, but directly influencing public opinion. Regional Federcaccia President Paolo Pini opened the proceedings by highlighting the urgency of a lively collaboration with the agricultural world, a reciprocity that can lead to great results even with respect to political interlocutors. The President underlined the quality of the hunter, the will to continuously improve and the ethical and practical commitment constantly made towards the environment and society and with the intention of improving relations between stakeholders. Paolo Pini also announces his intention to give life to a new conference precisely on the strengthening of intentions between hunters and farmers, a conference that has the programmatic purpose of implementing a formalized cooperation between the world of hunting and agriculture.
Tangible data
The environmental specialist Nomisma Salvatore Giordano then presented the rich research commissioned by FIdC Nazionale which brought to light tangible data without which we would remain stuck on opinions without concreteness. As the Academy teaches us, it is the tangible and measurable aspects that shape reality. Hunting in Italy has a total economic value of 8.500 million euros, of which over 700 million derive from the natural value associated with environmental restoration and the maintenance of green areas and wetlands. From a naturalistic point of view, the hunter is personally involved in the protection of habitats, bringing within himself a know-how of primary importance; especially in an era in which the concept of Nature seems abstract, when it is actually made up of living animal and vegetable beings and inorganic elements that must be known in every aspect before being enjoyed. The self-consumption of game, health monitoring, the protection of the banks, the cleaning of the river beds, the maintenance of the paths in the woods and of the carriage roads, the use of wild herbs, the recognition of the mushrooms, the surveys of the presence of migratory species, the censuses of ungulates, are only a part of the work produced by hunting in Italy and which can be summarized by speaking of social, economic, health, ecological, water, natural value and prevention of damage to crops. Hundreds of millions of euros which in the absence of our work should be allocated by local administrations.
Lots of misinformation
An extremely interesting fact that emerged from the study is that 2 out of 3 Italians consider themselves uninformed about everything we have talked about, this is a focal point on which to stop and think, and then act. The presentation was followed by several interventions at the speakers' table. Honored by the presence of the Councilor for Agriculture and Agri-food, Hunting and Fishing of the Emilia-Romagna Region Alessio Mammi, who takes the floor expressing full support for us hunters and highlighting the value that hunting has for the agricultural world. Wildlife management is essential both for correct agricultural production and for the health and road safety of citizens. Assessor Mammi supports such a thorny area today with strength and determination despite the various difficulties encountered. The Mayor of Modena Giancarlo Muzzarelli recalled that he has always supported our activity, he recognizes its weight as a keystone in the management of the territory, he also recalled an event we organized in the naturalistic field as an example of the sharing vision that Federcaccia has in towards citizens to increase sensitivity towards substantial issues such as environmental protection. The President of Cia Emilia-Romagna Marco Bergami and the President of Confagricoltura Emilia-Romagna Davide Venturi bring positive interventions, support and openness, a productive comparison that deserves to be cultivated with care.
The qualitative aspects
A substantial debate ignited in the room, representatives of various stakeholders took the floor, bringing their own experience and hope. During the debate, the purely cultural question of the topics covered also emerged, a vital oxygen that deserves to be investigated further and in depth, in order to then be able to divulge the qualitative aspect that lives in our rural world. The conclusion of the works was in the hands of the Presidential Office of FIdC Nazionale in the person of Stefano Merighi, who reiterated the relevance of this study as a solid foundation for a contemporary language, an opportunity for growth for a future of cooperation interdisciplinary. Merighi also recalled the European law on the restoration of nature voted a few days earlier in the European Parliament, a law which provides for the restoration of 20% of ecosystems by 2030, establishing a common objective relating to global well-being, sustainability, biodiversity conservation, great themes that we can proudly share. The earth has been plowed and sown, now it's up to us all to give water and protection so that it flourishes! (Valentina Morsiani – Federcaccia Modena).
