But what depopulation of the mountain? In the Belluno there are around 34 thousand ungulates, that is to say deer, roe deer, mouflons, chamois ... In practice, one ungulate every 6 inhabitants. The report of the 2021-2022 hunting season, presented yesterday (Sunday 25 April) at the Hunter's feast, During the “Hunting, fishing, nature” fair in Longarone. It is a fact that testifies on the one hand the great naturalness of the Belluno environment, where wild animals are able to proliferate with great ease. On the other hand, however, the population of deer and roe deer is the "daughter" of depopulation: nature takes back the spaces that man leaves it (it is a fact, free from any ideological setting that could arise from it).
The most common species in the province is roe deer: according to the censuses carried out, the population is around 12.870 heads. Next, the deer that has increased a lot in recent years: today there are an estimated 11.660 specimens. The data of the chamois instead speak of 6.980 heads, those of the mouflon are around 2.400. It is difficult to estimate the fallow deer population, it is impossible to quantify wild boars, especially in great growth (with all the related and connected damage to agriculture).
With the available data, about 33.900 units are reached, practically as many ungulates as the residents of the entire Municipality of Belluno (or of the entire Agordino area). Compared to the populations present in the province, the withdrawal plan approved by Ispra (the reference institution of the Ministry of the Environment) spoke of 6.393 head. The hunting reserves have culled 5.274 specimens (in addition to 1.033 wild boars, a species that can be hunted all year round). So they covered 76% of the plan (News in quota)
