La Province of Cuneo communicated the data relating to the wild boar control plan and the results of the hunting season 2019 just ended. They were shot down 6.653 heads (data from an ATC are missing), equal to about + 24% compared to the average of the previous four years, with an average increase of about 1.300 specimens. Also taking into account that the number of hunters is constantly decreasing (today there are about 4.500 and only a practical part there wild boar hunting) we can deduce the significant increase in the wild boar population throughout the provincial territory, despite the significant contribution offered by the hunting world.
We recall that the Province carries out the wildlife control activity by regional delegation and adopted the Control Plan of the wild boar species in April 2019, after having acquired the opinion of the Higher Institute for Environmental Research (Ispra) and the regional indications regarding the prevention of damage caused by wildlife and hunting activities to agricultural productions, with the operational indications on the control of wild boar in the hands of owners or tenants of the funds. These are the results from autumn 2019.
The Province has carried out about 30 targeted wild boar control interventions (26 wild boars killed) thanks to the intervention of its local wildlife and environmental police, always with the aim of contain agricultural damage especially in areas with higher concentrations of animals, that is, in the Alba area and in the Alta Langa. A good result if we consider that there are only 15 employees, in addition to the commander and who carry out surveillance activities on a territorial surface greater than that of Liguria. Also owners or tenants of funds authorized by the Province they started their control activity with urgent interventions. 72 of them were communicated, with the killing of 13 animals even if, considering the high number of interventions carried out, it is not excluded that several animals culled have not been declared.
An increase in the number of control interventions by the Provincial Police is already foreseen (50 interventions) through day and night stakeout shooting which, in the face of a very little disturbance of the remaining fauna, allow a fair efficacy and selectivity. With the coordination of the Province, also the owners or conductors of land qualified for the slaughter of wild boar and again in theAlbese and in the Alta Langa where there are more ungulates (Cuneodice.it).
