A multi-year project
The award was officially presented this morning during the National Assembly “Hunter of the Year”, which the Italian Hunting Federation awards to those who have distinguished themselves for particular merits or who, with their commitment in wildlife-hunting, environmental, ethical or social matters, represent a positive example for society of the work of the Federation and of the figure of the hunter. For 2024, the national President Massimo Buconi awarded the honor to the “Life Perdix” Working Group, the multi-year project financed by the European Community concluded in recent days after 6 years, which saw the Italian Hunting Federation – for the first time and to date the only Italian hunting association to take part in a Life – engaged in the recovery and conservation of the Italian partridge (Perdix perdix italica), declared extinct in nature, together with ISPRA – Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research; CUFAA – Forestry, environmental and agri-food unit command of the Carabinieri; ENCI – National Agency for Italian Kennel Club; Legambiente; Management Body for Parks and Biodiversity – Po Delta and the Fédération Nationale des Chasseurs (French National Federation of Hunters).
Survival of reintroduced subjects
The recognition was motivated by having validly contributed to all phases of the conception and implementation of the Project by implementing the best management and health techniques to ensure the survival of the reintroduced subjects. From genetic analysis to captive breeding and subsequent reintroduction of viable populations within the Natura 2000 Valle del Mezzano site, the members of the Working Group, alone and together with the other partners, have pursued the objective with conviction and tenacity, achieving excellent results and acquiring significant knowledge and experience, thanks also to a fruitful comparison with the management practices tested in France. Over the years, the Working Group has demonstrated the professional skills of Federcaccia as well as the participation and interest of the hunting world in projects aimed at protecting and conserving biodiversity at a European level, increasing the prestige and reputation of the Federation and of hunters as a whole with State Bodies, Institutions and Organs, all stakeholders involved in various capacities and civil society.
The more than deserved mentions
All the members involved in various capacities over the years deserve a single mention.
