Alarming situation
Every year, far too many wild animals are involved in serious accidents on Umbrian roads . The Perugia-based ENPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has raised the alarm about the impact between wildlife and vehicles, putting down in black and white a very specific, yet predictable, perspective.
One of the recent cases
This is the position of the National Animal Protection Agency: " Respect for wildlife also involves more careful and responsible driving. Reducing speed can save lives, both human and animal. A concrete example comes from the case of a roe deer recently rescued after a collision with a car. Despite days of treatment and a brief recovery, the animal died from the serious injuries it sustained, particularly a head trauma ."
Life Roads Project
The statement continues: " The phenomenon of roadkill is largely underestimated. In addition to the environmental damage and the pain caused to animals, it also has an economic and social impact. ENPA calls on institutions to identify the most critical road sections and implement prevention systems such as those envisaged by the Life Strade project: intelligent sensors, acoustic deterrents, and visual devices capable of keeping animals away from the road or promptly alerting motorists ."
