The charges
Today the Court of Grosseto sentenced the farmer Salvatore Fais, leader of the tractor protest, to seven months in prison for killing an animal and hunting theft. This was announced by the LAV (Lega Anti Vivisection). The man had first killed in April 2017 a wolf, then skin it and hang it on a road sign near Campetroso di Monterotondo Marittimo, later affixing a sign.
The evidence against the accused
The evidence collected through the meticulous investigations carried out by the Carabinieri with the Forestry and RIS have attributed to Fais the fingerprint found on the sign hanging next to the wolf's body, as well as the DNA found on the ropes used to hang the sign itself, just as it was ascertained that his cell phone had hooked up to the telephone cells located near the place of discovery.
The defence
The judge also accepted the PM's reconstruction according to which the killing of the wolf with a snare-trap was part of the same plan. During the previous hearings, Fais' defense had asked for an acquittal, later denied, because the defendant had already been subjected to an administrative sanction imposed in the meantime for the same facts. In the final hearing, Fais' defense again asked that the killing of the wolf be considered as "dictated by necessity" since the defendant's farm had been attacked by predators.
