Konus scopes: which ones to choose?

The optics are very useful accessories for hunting ungulates at long and short distances, especially those that hide in clearings and thick woods, where aiming is more complicated. Lately we often talk about aiming optics, the best brands to use and the quality / price ratio of many of these products. Lately there is also often talk of companies that produce quality professional optics at affordable prices.

One of these is Konus, a popular Italian brand that produces hunting and shooting optics. Konus is a company that is part of Made in Italy and that honors it by creating functional and quality products.

The quality of Konus is tied to a national brand and this is not displeasing at all, although many hunters tend to prefer the well-known foreign brands.

These preferences do not hide criticisms or perplexities towards Konus optics, but only personal “tastes” and free consumer choices. In fact, when choosing an aiming optic, it is also necessary to consider the type of rifle on which it will be applied and the type of hunting it will be used for. In the Konus online catalog, however, the types of rifles and calibers on which to apply the aiming optics are clearly indicated.

The Konus optics have the 30/30 reticle, that is a grid placed inside the eyepiece and divided into four sections that allow you to determine the distance of the game and its size. In the most advanced technology optics, the reticle is also illuminated, i.e. a red dot appears in the center of intersection of the grid, which allows you to see the prey even in poor visibility conditions. Illuminated 30/30 reticle optics also provide standard functionality without illumination.

Konus also produces optics with engraved reticles: these are laser engraved grids, which are very robust and without the risk of displacements and aiming errors. The Konus range of aiming optics is very wide: you just have to choose the one that best suits your rifle and your needs. Leafing through the company's online catalog, you will notice optics suitable only for shooting and for 22-gauge shotguns and optics suitable for hunting. Among the models suitable for hunting we remember the 7257 K.PRO 3-12 × 50 30/30 ILL (where ILL stands for illuminated reticle), the 7256 K.PRO 3-12 × 50 30/30, 7265 K.PRO 3-9 × 50 30/30, the 7253 K.PRO 3-9 × 32 30/30 ILL and the 7248 K.PRO 2.5 × 32 AIM-PRO.

Of course, heavier and longer optics with a larger diameter must be combined with weapons that are equally resistant and robust. Some models of optics are particularly suitable for hunting at dawn or dusk. This is the model 7256 K.PRO 3-12 × 50 30/30, optics with a diameter of 50 mm and the classic 30/30 reticle, suitable for hunting during twilight and when the animals are active. Konus optics are tested to withstand the backlash of shots. This is another detail to keep in mind before buying a lens. In fact, not very resistant tools can break during the shot, also causing damage to the hunter.

The technical characteristics of the Konus aiming optics, with 3-12 × 50 objective magnification are: lens hood; 30/30 lattice; field of view at 100 meters, 9,5m at 3x - 2,4m at 12x; eye relief, or accommodation distance of the eye, 76,2 mm; exit pupil, 16,7mm at 3x - 4,2mm at 12x; snap value in millimeters at 100 meters, 6,3 millimeters; adjustment range for distance of 100 m, 1,45 meters; mounting distance, 53 mm.

The Konus sighting or aiming optics remain in a medium-low price range and include figures ranging from 150 to 500 euros.

The price difference of these lenses, with those of more famous brands, is considerable. The models of the "big brands" can cost even more than 1000 euros, or as much as the salary of a worker. However, even a worker has the right to fully live his passion for hunting. With its affordable products, Konus, a Veronese company founded in 1979, has tried to target hunters who cannot afford to spend large sums. Of course, the quality of a product is always measured by use.

In the case of Konus scopes we can say that they are variable scopes, that is able to adapt to the aiming of ungulates in the mountains and in open spaces. For shooting, a maximum magnification of 10x is convenient, while the maximum magnification of 12x is ideal only for better observing the target without hitting it. This magnification is also suitable for hunting roe deers, fallow deer, mouflons and red deer, while the 3x is ideal for hunting bears and wild boars during full moon nights. Generally speaking, Konus 3-12x 50 optics are ideal for aspect hunting in poor visibility conditions.
