A motion for a resolution was presented to the European Parliament, supported by the Vice-President of the intergroup hunting and biodiversity Marco Dreosto, which calls on the European Commission to withdraw the Regulation on the ban on lead in ammunition in wetlands. The resolution is made up of multiple aspects that highlight the clear criticalities of the text proposed by the EC - explains Hon. Dreosto - which highlights the non-compliance with several fundamental principles such as that of proportionality, in consideration of the disproportionate extension of the prohibition on the use of an element, in ammunition only and not in other forms in which it is released into the environment and the fact that, to date, 23 out of 27 member countries have already applied the ban on use in the areas in question for some time, but none in the manner imposed by the Regulation.
The main issue remains the definition of humid area, too broad, unclear and difficult to perceive, which would create many problems for operators, as the ECHA agency itself had already highlighted to the EC in 2017. The provision that provides for the application of sanctions to hunters is also under discussion for the sole possession of lead ammunition in prohibited areas "any violation should refer only to use and not to a hypothesis of use of the prohibited ammunition, European states need to receive clear provisions, which can be correctly applied instead of interpreted ”concludes Dreosto, who takes the opportunity to thank all the technicians who have contributed and FACE, appealing to the common sense of fellow MEPs, in order to reject the EC proposal.
