The theory of where the most is the least appears to us to be in constant distance from the current reality and if once it could have interpreted a certain mentality with a good approximation, today we realize that this is not the case. Often what happens in the United States of America reverberates quickly in us and just such a discrepancy between the proverb and the action comes to the surface. The average American, the one elected as a prototype by the sales sectors of commerce and industry, is very far from the concept of spendthrift: he is indeed a prudent dispenser of his own substances from which he separates after a careful and fussy assessment of his real needs. and, jointly, the cost and benefit ratio of each product. This is what came to mind when observing the Leupold rifle scope, the VX 3 HD 4,5-14 × 50 model, entrusted to us by Paganini of Turin., always kind in guaranteeing us the information on the news, not only in the form of reports, but in providing the tool for a technical test. The recent optic has come, as they say, to bean and let's see why.
Classic values, but with the 1 inch tube
Gone are the times of optics divided, roughly, by the measurement of the central tube with 26 mm for Europeans and 1 inch for the Americans, today the standardization of 30 mm unites both origins, not counting 34 or 35 mm and even more adopted by some manufacturers for their top models. Today, among some signatures of the optical empyrean of the Old Continent, the old measure has been abandoned while at least thirty years ago for example, a top company currently had it in the catalog so as to see it mounted on the Sauer 90 that our son has in I have been using it for over twenty five years.
The fact is that this specimen of rifle, after a bad fall, has always been a little sophisticated in the liking of ammunition, but with a performing reload of N / 204 and 120 g Nosler Ballistic Tip it provided exceptional shot patterns with appreciable consistency. Then almost suddenly he started having tantrums and we tried to intervene with what we had available, always without the desired results. At one point, to exclude any possibility, we looked at the telescope with suspicion and the temporary possession of the Leupold, precisely with the one-inch tube, was very favorable.
We mounted the new VX 3 HD taking advantage of the coincidence and let's immediately say that something else technical and certainly not the optics, are to be examined for the not too happy groups: on the other hand, the tests at the Carrù (CN) shooting range, guests of his friend Giorgio Rosso (Tel. 347 969 2677) made it possible to underline the performance of this model which falls within a range that we would define as being of high consumption due to its characteristics and price.
Let's start from what is subtended by the tube of limited amplitude: today the increasingly widespread diffusion of kipplaufs would require optics where the mass and the magnification and objective values are skilfully conjugated. We have used the conditional because often we notice choices a little in discrepancy with respect to a correct logical sequence, with heavy and imposing optics on rifles in which the manufacturer has put his own to remain in those forms and in those characteristic and peculiar weights of this type of weapon. Hence the narrower tube, compactness and reduced mass play a role on many shotguns, but especially on mountain ones, be it the characteristic single barrel or the more common bolt action.
So after mounting the optics on the sour 90, we focused on an initial aesthetic evaluation: we continue to consider this excellence of the German manufacturer one of the most beautiful expressions of the sector and the telescope, of measured proportions, follows it in perfect harmony: a first step that is entirely favorable because also the eye, and not only the one who will aim, wants his share. We are ready for the tests on the shooting bench of the Carrù shooting range appreciating the immediacy of the adjustments: by unscrewing the eyepiece locking ring, the reticle, of the Duplex type, perhaps the most common in the USA, and also often chosen here with us with the four thickened bars, leaving the central area at an end, which is wider than the norm to give greater visibility on the field of action.
The target coverage is especially suitable for hunting shooting, proving also valid for shooting range sessions. The interpupillary distance and the exit pupil allow a quick aiming of the target without struggling with the accommodation of the eye and the posture of the head. Brightness with HD (high definition) lenses combined with anti-reflective treatment Index Matched it is largely favorable for a high resolution, therefore a sharp and detailed image; later we appreciate the contrast, that is the peculiarity of these optics to detach the subject from a mimetic background, those that the wild ones instinctively choose to better escape the hunter's sight; furthermore, the minimization of glare is meticulously taken care of, the light that is dispersed within the optics and affects the detail, contrast and chromatic quality of the image. Even in a session at the shooting range, when the sun comes across or even directly on the sheet of paper, you can appreciate the advantages mentioned above by being able to exactly control the position of the cross on the targeted point and taking care of the shot in the best possible way.
Adjustments to the turrets benefit from the well perceptible and distinctly audible clicks to the fingers combined with the regular and precise response of the impacts: one of the characteristics for which the Leupold is justly famous. The upper turret contains a spring button to intervene on the rotation: once the desired calibration has been reached, the small Allen key supplied is used to bring the reference to zero, thus having the graduated scale for raising and returning to the starting point reached which the button locks again. The drift adjustment is normal with the drum protected by a screw cap: here too there are lines of faith for fine-tuning and the value of each click subtends ¼ of MOA.
To end the exhibition, let's give a couple of figures: 453,6 grams (in practice a pound) the mass of the decidedly light instrument, € 1.024 (VAT included) the coin proposed to take possession of this perspective which, we repeat, remains now one of the few equipped with a one-inch tube which, in some cases, is really handy. It is not really a very low entity, but one that we find adequate for a whole series of technical factors underlying it L embedded in the cross of a reticle, including a lifetime warranty for any component of the scope offered by the manufacturer to which you can add the exquisite and timely service of the Paganini of Turin.
