THEHigher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) has received in recent weeks several proposals regarding the control of the mouflon on the Island of Elba, to be precise in the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago. Now he has decided to clarify the matter. ISPRA recalled how the origin of this population depends on the releases for hunting purposes that were made in the XNUMXs.
The species is therefore allochthonous and causes quite significant impacts on biodiversity, especially in island contexts. The Institute then highlighted the impact that mouflons have on 189 species at risk of extinction, without forgetting the damage to plant species and natural habitats. Eradication is foreseen by the National Strategy for Biodiversity, although in Italy there are exceptions, namely that of Sardinian mouflon, defined parautoctono in 2015 (it means that it was introduced before the 500th century).
As stated in the note from ISPRA, then, killing of the animal is also allowed inside the parks to recompose the ecological imbalances: the Park of the Tuscan Archipelago is a national park, consequently not even the technical evaluation of the institute is necessary. Finally, there are no alternatives sterilizing feed able to carry out a non-bloody control, while the transfer to Sardinia and Corsica must be made necessary by conservation objectives.
