“In the hunting season 2020-2021 the killing of wild boars In Lombardy they decreased due to the lockdown and the suspension of hunting activities. If the withdrawals in control and selection have increased, the killing with collective hunting they have halved compared to last year ". This was stated by the Lombard regional councilor for Agriculture, Food and Green Systems Fabio Rolfi presenting data on wild boar killing in the region. During the 2019/2020 hunting season the killing in Lombardy had been 9.198, in the same period of the 2020/21 season they dropped to 7.559.
The control activity recorded an increase (from 1.222 to 1.342) and the withdrawals with selection hunting also increased from 3.118 to 3.830. The numbers relating to collective hunting have been halved: from 4.858 last season to 2.387 this year. In Lecco on the contrary, there was an increase in killing: 439 wild boars in the last season against 306 in the previous season. “We asked - continued Rolfi - to the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research the extension of the wild boar hunting period to the end of February. The uncontrolled proliferation of this animal represents a danger for agriculture and for man. The reports that are coming to us from numerous areas of Lombardy certify that it is necessary to tackle the problem in a serious, pragmatic and ideological way ".
“In the first period of application of the new regional law - the commissioner pointed out - we had immediately recorded an increase in abatements of 25%. Unfortunately the different moments of lockdown they thwarted the work. For this reason, I believe it is necessary to extend the hunting period by one month: it would still allow the maximum time frame of three months to be respected and at the same time to carry out the necessary interventions. Wild boars in Lombardy have caused 128 road accidents in 2019, practically one every three days ".
