The question to the Government
Through a specific question sent to the Ministry of Agriculture, the Hon. Francesco Bruzzone specifically asked to include thewild goose (Anser anser) among the species that can be hunted at a national level. “At a European level it has increased significantly compared to the past. Birdlife International itself highlights how the species occupies an extremely large area, with an extremely large population size, estimating the breeding population between 797.000 and 975.000 mature individuals, while the wintering population is estimated at 1.190.000-1.470.000 individuals”.
Overwintering individuals
“The trend of the species is increasing, both in Europe and in the 27 EU member states. Likewise, in Italy, official censuses confirm that the population of wintering individuals has even tripled in the last twenty years, going from 560 individuals counted in 2004 to 15.473 individuals counted this year in the province of Venice alone. In the EU, the increase in populations has had a strong impact on agriculture, due to grazing on cultivated land (autumn-winter cereals in particular); even in Italy in recent years the damage has begun to be significant, especially in the flat areas located in the lower Po Valley such as the Ferrara and Venice areas, as widely highlighted by the trade associations present at local level (Confagricoltura, Cia)”.
Directive 309 of 1979
“It should be noted that the greylag goose is already included in Annex II/1 of Directive 79/409/EEC which indicates the species that can be hunted within the Member States. I have therefore asked Minister Lollobrigida whether, through a specific Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers, she intends to include the greylag goose species among the huntable species referred to in art. 18 of Law 157/1992.” declared Hon. Bruzzone in his note transmitted by the Chamber” (Source: PRESS OFFICE OF HON. BRUZZONE).
