Uncontrolled expansion
The European Parliament has expressed its support for the change of wolf protection status: from “strictly protected” to “protected”. With this vote, the Strasbourg plenary closed a process that lasted more than two years, during which Confagricoltura continuously worked with parliamentarians to bring to their attention the issue of the uncontrolled expansion of predators, particularly in the mountains, and the need to take a firm position on the matter.
Attacks becoming more frequent
Confagricoltura, in particular, had acted as a spokesperson for the strong concerns of agricultural businesses over the increasingly frequent attacks by wolves on flocks and livestock, resulting in significant economic damage to businesses and danger to communities. Today's vote follows that of the Permanent Committee of the Bern Convention in December and the subsequent proposal by the Commission to Parliament itself to implement this decision in European legislation.
Citizens' safety
The new regulatory framework will allow Member States to adopt more flexible management measures to address growing wolf populations, especially where citizens' safety is at risk or there are conflicts with the agricultural sector. (Source CONFAGRICOLTURA)
