The President of the intergroup in the EU Parliament "Biodiversity, Hunting & Coutryside" Alvaro Amaro and the vice president Marco Dreosto, co-signed and sent to the European Commission a question concerning the illegal killing of migratory birds outside the European borders. "The videos and photos that for years have immortalized real massacres are all too well known to the detriment of protected and non-protected species, mainly committed in the Middle Eastern geographic area - highlights Dreosto, who adds - migratory birds that reproduce on European territory cannot continue to be killed deliberately and massively in the wintering areas, especially when our Member States strictly comply with the protection of protected species and are bound by management plans towards thehuntable birdlife".
In fact, the Member States of the EU have been working for decades on the conservation of their bird populations through various instruments, such as the EU directives on nature, international action plans or national programs and combat the illegal killing of birds, while millions of birds are illegally killed each year in non-EU countries through nets, traps, calling devices and other techniques. MEPs asked EC whether it believes illegal killing of birds outside the EU endangers the work of the Member States on the conservation of bird species and, if so, what action it intends to take in this regard.
