Migration pass at risk due to poachers. In recent days, the operation called "Recall", a reference in English, aimed at preventing and suppressing violations of hunting regulations linked to the use of all those electronic equipment capable of reproducing the birds' cry to attract birds and facilitate their killing by poachers.
The "Recall" operation, which took place in the period from 17 October to 13 November, was attended by the volunteers of the Lipu in collaboration with the men of the station commands of the State Forestry Corps of Civitavecchia, Ostia, Tolfa, Manziana, Monterotondo, Pomezia, Rocca of Pope, San Vito Romano, Palestrina, Ciciliano, Sant'Oreste and Cineto Romano, Velletri.
In a statement, the State Forestry Corps explained that in the province of Rome the most used calls are those to attract birds belonging to the species Song Thrush and Skylark; these calls are also particularly used in the periods between mid-October and mid-November precisely in conjunction with the migratory flow of these two species that affect all of Italy and Lazio in particular.
The men of the Forestry carried out numerous checks, including in civilian clothes, and at the end of the operation the overall balance was of twenty-one people reported for various types of crimes including the use of electromagnetic warnings, killing of species not allowed for three of the controlled persons, use of the rifle without limiter of the number of shots and failure to comply with the order of the Authority; not least the administrative sanctions imposed for a total of 37 in all for a total of over 4.870 euros following ascertained violations regarding the omitted marking of the killed items on the booklet, the failure to collect the shells, close stalking, failure to exhibit the license, exceeding the maximum allowed game bag, failure to score for boar hunting in progress and transit outside the ordinary rural road system.
It should be remembered that electronic calls are prohibited by hunting regulations due to the ease with which animals are attracted to them with a consequent high possibility of killing them; the Birds Directive 2009/147 / EEC provides in Annex IV the prohibition of the use of recorders and the Law 157/92 on the protection of fauna and hunting collection provides in Article 21 the prohibition of the use of electronic calls, setting Article 30 criminal sanctions. The use of electronic callbacks also constitutes a crime punishable with a fine of up to 1.549 euros.
The main reason for the ban on the use of lures in hunting is therefore the excessive advantage of the hunter over the hunted species, to which are added further serious consequences on the conservation of these species. Specifically, some species of migratory avifauna are particularly attracted to calls so much that they return to the places where they had heard the call or even interrupting the migration.
